The affecting score to a powerful coming-of-age story.
This movie is the critical darling of 2016 and a likely best picture nom, but the real story is the score. Britell conjures a special kind of soul for this film, effortlessly explaining, without overpowering, the wave of conflicting, uncomfortable emotions that dance around the film. He is careful to hone the sound, only deepening the emotional fulcrum of the story. It's not easy to pull off, which is why this is such an impressive feat.
Music for film poetry
This score has so many amazing moments of sound, feeling and depth. There are many little treasures of unforgettable progressions of chords and delicacy of instrumentation. It is quite refreshing to have music you can breathe into. For further discovery, seeing the move would greatly help to understand the intentions of the music.
The title says it all. "The Middle of the World" is one of the best classical pieces I have ever heard and I've studied classical piano and classical musicians for 11 years.
