Editors’ Notes

Sunny in tone and uplifting in spirit, My Paper Heart presents singer/songwriter Francesca Battistelli as a woman of faith and emotion, meeting the world with an enraptured heart. Her debut release is very much in the piano-centered pop/rock mode of Tori Amos and Sara Bareilles, minus the angst and sarcasm. Producer Ian Eskelin goes for a brightly contemporary sound, framing Francesca’s sweet yet forceful vocals with cleanly-wrought arrangements. “Free to Be Me,” “Unpredictable,” and the title tune are typical of the album’s upbeat tracks with their easy-flowing tempos and ear-snagging keyboard hooks. “Blue Sky” shows off a sensuous R&B undercurrent in Battistelli’s style, while “Time in Between” suggests an affinity for theatrical pop. The album’s songs stress the positive changes God has brought to the singer’s life; “I’m Letting Go” captures this sense of liberation with its strutting tempo and confident lyrics. When Battistelli offers a worship song with “Forever Love,” she makes her praise sound personal and intimate. It’s this natural quality that ultimately distinguishes My Paper Heart. Battistelli’s technical gifts and vibrant optimism make this an eminently likeable effort.

Somewhat Derivative, yet saved by strong songs

Just 22 years old, singer songwriter Francesca (Franny) Batistelli sings with the richness and depth of a much older woman, and, while the blend of rock, soul, pop and jazz of her debut, My Paper Heart, would suggest a desire to connect with an older demographic, her lyrics are definitely aimed at her peers, tackling subjects such as trust, risk taking and finding ones identity in Christ, all with a down to earth whimsy that should endure her to a large (and not necessarily female) audience. Her sound is informed by many classic influences, yet is thoroughly modern, riding the coat-tails of current radio darlings Colbie Callait, and Sara Bareilles, but saved from contrivance by the presence of top notch song-craft, courtesy of notable producer, Ian Eskelin and Battistelli herself. It would be criminal not to mention Franny’s voice: a passionate instrument that is rich, resonant and burnished in the manner of the late, lamented Eva Cassidy, one of the finest female vocalists ever. With stellar singing, advanced songwriting skills and a sure sense of who she is as an artist, Battistelli embarks on what is sure to be a rewarding career (for her AND her listeners) with her stellar debut.

Absolutely amazing, from start to finish. Not a bad track in the whole lot. It's one of the best Christian albums to have been released in a long time.

Dove Award winning, Grammy Award nominated Christian pop songstress Francesca Battistelli began her music career at a young age. When she was six years old, the New York City native attended a Broadway performance of The Secret Garden and walked away with her sights set on the stage. Both of Battistelli's parents were experienced theater performers, so her decision came as a surprise to no one. Acting classes and dance lessons helped her form a solid work ethic, and by the age of 15, Battistelli...
