Album Review

One of the better compilations of Three Dog Night material, Celebrate covers all the important bases in the popular singles band's career. There's a brief hint of pre-3DN material from co-lead singers Danny Hutton and Cory Wells (no Chuck Negron), along with one stellar, tragically unreleased track from the band's brief Redwood incarnation, the Brian Wilson-penned "Time to Get Alone." The remainder of this two-CD collection recaps the group's many Top 40 hits along with choice album tracks. The songs are judiciously chosen, and the liner notes provide insights into the band's creative process and internal skirmishes, but there's nothing in the way of remastered tracks or uncovered obscurities. Nevertheless, this is a better option for Three Dog Night fans than any of the numerous single-disc greatest hits collections available, simply because there are no glaring oversights in the song choices. The expanded selection also makes the set a great one to convert anyone not yet warm to Three Dog Night's intricate harmony stylings: just play them the gorgeous non-singles "It's for You," "My Impersonal Life," and "I'd Be So Happy" back to back.

A Very Good Deal

I was amazed when I found that this set of CDs was only $6.99! Three Dog Night was always lightly regarded by critics because they depended on outside songwriters for material. Having heard some of the original artists sing these same compostions, the"Dogs" did a great job of arranging and interpreting songs. Great vocals and a tight backing band made them very popular in the early Seventies. This is a great perspective of their music with many of their better songs. A must for those who like 60's and early 70's pop.

Great songs...too bad you must now purchase them track by track

This was an excellent collection of 3Dog songs, including some I'd never heard before. It's perfect if you need a track or two to fill out your collection but...what a shame that iTunes Store decided not to sell it as a complete album anymore, because I know I'M NOT going to spend $42 for an album that they used to sell for $7! 5 stars for content, 1 star for pricing!

Awesome harmonies - obvious Brian Wilson influence

This is a great collection for anyone who remembers this sometimes passed over band. I never knew they had covered Time To Get Alone! I remember walking through Epcot and hearing "LIAR" from a distance. To my delight it was the current lineup of the band with at least 2 original members. I had played some of their hits in a cover band in the 70's. I think they have influenced my originals also. P.S. $6.99 for 43 songs WHAT A DEAL! Thanks iTunes! MAC RULES FOREVER! Someday the PC (not politcally correct) users will learn.

Three Dog Night scored a succession of 21 hit singles, including eleven Top Tens, and twelve consecutive gold albums from 1969 to 1975, thanks to the slick, sometimes soulful vocal harmonies of singers Danny Hutton, Chuck Negron, and Cory Wells and an excellent ear for quality material. While often criticized as commercial, the band was noted for its creative arrangements and interpretations, and their cover choices gave exposure (and royalties) to several talented songwriters: Nilsson ("One"), Laura...
