iTunes Review

Fitz & The Tantrums was born after songwriter/vocalist Michael Fitzpatrick picked up a second-hand organ and started writing tunes in 2008—a seemingly unremarkable action that sparked a remarkably swift ascent into the public consciousness. By the time the band released their 2010 full-length debut, Pickin’ Up The Pieces, Fitzpatrick’s knack for mashing together ’60s Motown, synth-heavy New Wave, and playful indie pop won over a rapt international audience. The group's second album, More Than Just a Dream, uses the same formula for even more disarming results. “Out of My League” cues up a chorus of hands-in-the-air ’80s pop with a hard-strutting, hand-clapping Funk Brothers' backbeat. Tunes like “The Walker” and “Keepin Our Eyes Out” might be mistaken for erstwhile Holland–Dozier–Holland singles if not for all the gleeful digital flourishes. When “MerryGoRound” brings the album to a close after a dozen of these optimistic hooks, the kitchen sink of era-spanning pop fragments will leave you breathless.

Well worth the wait

After a bit if a wait, Fitz and the Tantrums deliver a catchy record with an evolved sound. It's classic Fitz, but better (if that is even possible). Their tour came to Buffalo, NY this past June 14th (my birthday) and they energized the crowd with an electric performance. Fitz serenaded fans with his soulful voice while we were rocked by the heart and showmanship of Ms Scaggs. Fitz and the gang left us wanting more. It was the best birthday gift ever. I'm gitty with anticipation for this new album. Ps It also doesn't hurt that everyone in the band is very easy on the eyes ;-) deff a Fitz fan!

Sounds like they gave up that retro soul sound for generic 80's era synth pop. Disappointing.

It's a little progressive sounding than their prior work, but they still keep that neo-soul sound. Definitely a hot track. My only issue is that Bruno Mars should open for them, not vice versa ;-)

Led by songwriter Michael Fitzpatrick, Fitz & the Tantrums brew up a retro sound inspired by Motown and Stax Records. Fitzpatrick initially formed the Tantrums as a neo-soul solo project; having purchased an old church organ, he found that it helped inspire his songwriting. While recording a solo EP, he recruited an old college friend, James King, to add horn arrangements to the material. The lineup grew from there, with the Tantrums eventually becoming a co-ed septet.
