Alice Coltrane

My mother used to play this album when we were children. I didn't understand it then, but I'm thankful to find it now.

A little history...

During this time, Alice Coltrane would visit A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, the founder-acharya of ISKCON, the Hare Krishna movement, and they would talk about all things spiritual and musical. The devotees would play some of her Krishna chants for him. George Harrison also had discussions about spiritual songs with the great acharya (one who teaches by example) who came down from a direct line of devotees, poets and musicians starting with Lord Krishna 5,000 years ago. Alice was a great interpreter of spiritual music through jazz and sometimes by just arranging chanting amongst devotees in India with traditional kirtan instruments - mrdanga drums and karatalas (cymbals).


Exquisite, soulful, funky, spiritual, orgasmic, lovely, humane. And that's an understatement.

Alice Coltrane was an uncompromising pianist, composer and bandleader, who spent the majority of her life seeking spiritually in both music and her private life.
