Klaus Badelt is a brilliant composer, so I've come to expect a lot from his scores. They're normally wonderful standalone works that are extremely listenable. This one... not so much. The music is decent, and I'm sure it works well with the movie, but it's lacking a little bit of punch for me. Start with Track 15 to get the best first, and go from there.
Different is good :)
No, this probably isn't a typical Klaus Badelt score. Is that bad? At first I wasn't sure, but after a few listens the music has definitely grown on me. "Dieter's Theme" is a soft, compelling masterpiece. I really like the finely crafted beat of "Hope," which starts quietly at the beginning, culminating in a loud orchestral roar, and then softening rather tranquilly for the last 40 seconds. I think you'll also find that "Rescue" is solid track. I'll leave it to someone else to review the rest of the album, but do try "Dieter's Theme" or "Rescue."
Not only is the film well done and absolutely the best movie I've seen in a theater in at least a year, the music fits it and adds to it. The opposite of a top-40 collage of pop and rock nostalgia which is standard for Vietnam era movies.
