Beautiful and Thoughtful

It's great to finally be able to buy these songs. Not only is the sound gorgeous, but the words make you stop and think. This is from the heart. I would recommend this to anyone for the catchy tunes and the powerful undertones about hope and finding acceptance in the world we live in. Absolutely love it.

Thanks, Benjie, for this and for all you do with NWP.

First met Benjie back in 2003 when he handed me a CD - his first album, and something he referred to simply as a "hobby project." My wife and I were blown away and couldn't believe he wasn't pursuing music professionally. We lost touch over the years, but we were thrilled when we heard another album was underway. Second efforts are always a gamble for musical artists you like, since you really want them to be as good as the first, but expectations can be hard to meet. That certainly wasn't a problem with Secrets Like Bones - it's truly phenomenal - and represents a real maturation of an already incredible talent. I prefer artists who tell stories with their music, and Benjie definitely fills that role. The songs on this album display nuanced and sophisticated harmonies, and the simple attractiveness of a well-played acoustic guitar. There's an equal mix of songs that utilize either rhythmic chords, or melodic (almost hypnotizing) finger-picking. There's no strong single favorite on this album for me - but simply the whole album. The Worker has this amazing accentuating trumpet; Secrets Like Bones (the title track) sounds like a lullaby to a forgotten time; and Handsome Devil is the track I'd pick setting out on a long road trip with a good buddy.

I've tried to think of other artists or music I could compare Benjie to, but I simply can't. When I listen to it, I find myself instantly transported to a dusty desert town, or the edge of the Grand Canyon, or worn wood and leather barstool in a Mexican town on the Baja Peninsula that the tourists don't know about. It's music that takes you somewhere, even if only in your mind.

Secrets Like Bones reminds me of other "instant classic albums" from my musical library that I return to over and over (like Benjie's fist album); and for the past few months (I got an advanced download of the album before it was available on iTunes) - this new offering has filled our house with music every single weekend.

Great new Album!

Benjie Howard crafts wonderful, heartfelt songs, with a vivid visual quality, songs often naked with personal experiences, and yet songs that don’t feel so personal that the listener has trouble relating.

Benjie’s expressive fingerpicking guitar work and his unaffected, clean vocals are the perfect accompaniment to lyrics rich with references to his years living in New Mexico and as a river guide in Grand Canyon.

Underlying his music, infusing it with no small amount of wisdom, Benjie’s worked for years on a unique approach to environmental and multi-cultural awareness and social justice, coming to fruition in 2004 as New Wilderness Project.

Benjie’s new album, Secrets Like Bones, is the result of collaborations with some incredible Bellingham-area musicians, rich with American roots and Southwest U.S. musical DNA.
