iTunes Review

As a prolific songwriter whose lyrics roll out as elliptical brain-teasers underpinned with aching emotions, Mark Eitzel isn't an "easy" listen, no matter how soothing or beautiful his melodies. For The Invisible Man, Eitzel took his songs and put many of them through keyboards and computer programs to see what the new formats could offer. "The Boy with the Hammer in the Paper Bag" starts as an ominous Portishead-like musical trope, with a short story that's both sorrowful and angry. "Can You See?" uses acoustic guitar lightly while adding festive rhythms and ambient tones to an unusual double-tracked vocal. "Christian Science Reading Room" is strikingly absurd and humorous. "The Global Sweep of Human History" isn't quite that ambitious, but it's yet another beautiful, low-key tune that only Eitzel could write. While Eitzel's intricate songwriting gives these songs years to unfold, it's his voice—so warm, sincere, and desperate to make a human connection—that lets these songs immediately connect.

A Subtle Masterpiece

This arresting, moving album is Eitzel's best solo record. Mixing comedy and tragedy in equal turns, its themes arc like that of a novel, from sweet confessionals to dark explorations of loss. And the final three songs positively bloom like an orchid. Check out "Can You See?", "Anything" and "Proclaim Your Joy."

John Mark Eitzel was born in the Northern California...
