Album Review

Philadelphia bedroom folk artist Lou Dog, after self-releasing tapes for eight years, makes his professionally produced debut with Slowly Drifting, an apt title for these meandering, melodic experiments. Like a slicker version of Beck's early tapes, Lou Dog mixes it up with stoner rock ("Slowly Drifting"), kooky lo-fi folk ("Improbable Mystery Rider"), and a little good old-fashioned, three-chord rock & roll ("Hey There Honey"). "At Ease..." smoothly calls to mind the laid-back southern California rock of the '70s and, along with the surf music of "Special Ed. and the Surf Jam," captures Lou Dog's most satisfying and accomplished style. With his half-sung, half-spoken Lou Reed-inspired (circa Songs for Drella) vocals, Lou Dog's Slowly Drifting makes for a pleasing if eclectic journey.

Cutting Edge!

From the heavy & heartfelt meandering vocals of 'Slowly Drifting' to the cutting edge 'Razor Blades', this collection gives a lot of utility to the solo folk genre. Lou Dog is a Bulldog that really leaves you wishing for more. I saw him at the 'Elbow Room' in Ypsilanti and his music is truly timeless. Keep at it Big Guy! Love ya man!
