iTunes Review

From the man who defined singer/songwriting in the '70s comes an album that fulfills the promise of his classic albums Late from the Sky and Running on Empty. Standing in the Breach is a strong, focused album. “The Birds of St. Marks”—a song he’s been finishing since 1967—is brought to perfection. “Yeah Yeah,” “The Long Way Around,” and “Leaving Winslow” feature Browne’s detailed lyricism and first-rate melodies. The cowrite on Woody Guthrie’s “You Know the Night” and translation of Cuban songwriter Carlos Varela’s “Walls and Doors” benefit from Browne’s soothing delivery.

Tired...old...boring

Slogging through the same old sound, Jackson Browne needs a new sensation. And can you believe all the photos of him in the booklet? Seriously!

Vintage Jackson

My title says it all. Look forward to the pre-order. Have been listening since 1972 and he rarely disappoints. If this tune is a sample of songs to come, yippee!

One Of His Best

Wow, I am late to this party. A week ago I finally found and purchased the latest from Jackson. It put an extended smile on my face. Frankly, I like everything about this CD - the lyrics (no surprise), the diversity of content that holds together, the competent back up band, and the outstanding production. But most of all, I just love the songs. Best non-live CD from Jackson in a long, long time. Would I rate this with the early years? Yes. I would love to hear him play this stuff live, since he is without question one of the most accomplished liver performers that I have ever seen (and I am one year older that Jackson). Birds of St. Marks takes on a whole new feel and meaning. This music is a treat. I want the old and loyal fans to give it a listen, and I encourage the uninitiated to also give it a try. This is a true artist at work, more reflective and more creative than we have seen him in years.

In many ways, Jackson Browne was the quintessential sensitive California singer/songwriter of the early '70s. Only Joni Mitchell and James Taylor ranked alongside him in terms of influence, but neither artist tapped into the post-'60s Zeitgeist like Browne. While the majority of his classic '70s work was unflinchingly personal, it nevertheless provided a touchstone for a generation of maturing baby boomers coming to terms with adulthood. Not only did his introspective, literate lyrics strike a nerve,...
