Album Review

The Essential Ted Nugent falls short of its billing for a couple of reasons. First of all, even if the sound is very good, there are no liner notes — just shots of Ted doing his guitar face on-stage, plus pictures of his Epic albums. Second, this concentrates just on his Epic recordings, without dipping into the Amboy Dukes, while also ignoring latter-day recordings for other labels, including his manly tribute to the great hunter, "Fred Bear" (if you live in Michigan, where you can't go a day in hunting season without hearing this song, you know this is a crucial omission). So, what do you get? A double-disc collection of Ted the "wildman" at his peak — which is good for those who just want the prime and the prime only, but it's a bit much for those who just want hits. As far as music goes, it's pretty good, since it does have those basic hits, but it's still a bit much and it could have been produced with a bit more care.

Customer Reviews

always overrated - even back in his day

Nugent was known more for his image, antics and song titles than any real talent. His guitar style is certainly loud but boring…I had better chops in high school after a couple years of playing than he ever did…average guitarist who slipped long ago intro irrelevance and now is trying to to be Seen again with his overwrought political publicity...

Monster Chops

Hey vananda. If your chops were better than Nugent after 2 years in high school, how many albums did you sell? What was your bands name? Get serious dude. Nugent was top notch back in the day. Obviously you weren't around back then or you would know better. Peace out.

Fred Bear?

Whats up with every Ted nugent greatest hits albums not having Fred Bear. Fred Bear is one of my favorite songs from him and many people i know really like that song.

Throughout his lengthy career, guitar wildman Ted Nugent has reveled in the controversy and criticism that always seems to follow in his path. While there's no denying his exceptional talent on the six-string, his knack for penning arena rock anthems, or his standing as one of rock's top live acts, it's his non-musical endeavors that have caused the most condemnation from his detractors (his pro-right wing beliefs, pro-gun advocacy, appreciation of hunting animals, etc.). But by the same token, Nugent...
