iTunes Review

Buddy Holly would have turned 75 on September 7, 2011 and in celebration of this fact, several tribute albums were released. Listen to Me features an unexpected collection of performers. One doesn’t often think of Stevie Nicks when Buddy Holly’s name comes up, but she does a fine version of “Not Fade Away” to her credit. Brian Wilson is one of the names you would expect and he doesn’t disappoint with a sympathetic rendition of “Listen to Me.” Ringo Starr’s “Think It Over” is likable Ringo. Pop traditionalist Jeff Lynne works up “Words of Love,” a Holly tune often recollected by its Beatles cover. Lyle Lovett brings his Texas roots to bear on “Well All Right.” Natalie Merchant slows “Learning the Game” to a precious crawl. Actress-singer Zooey Deschanel takes a straightforward approach to “It’s So Easy,” a Holly number often known by its Linda Ronstadt cover. Ronstadt herself does a rockabilly-blues cover of “That’ll Be the Day.” Holly’s tunes are so much a part of rock’s foundation that they hold up perfectly after all these years.

Not even close

I'm a big buddy holly fan and this cd just made me go running to the original versions for sanctuary to my ears. if you want a good buddy holly cover cd go get - rave on a cd released a couple of months ago with great talent Like Paul mcartney, Fiona apple zoey DESchannel etc.

Jeff Lynne Shines

The stand out on the album is Jeff Lynne's Words Of Love. Other stand outs include Stevie Nicks, Brian Wilson, Jackson Browne, Ringo Starr, Chris Isaak and Linda Ronstadt. This is a much better collection than Rave On with the exception of Zooey Deschanel, who does better as She and Him on that album than she does here. Love this album. But it needed MORE Jeff Lynne. And less of Eric Idle - sorry, love Eric, and maybe if he sung it without the comic reading, maybe... It's not a bonus song, its an insult.. And that is looking at it on the bright side of life!

Interesting Mix - But seek 1996's "Not Fadeaway" for a better Tribute

It's Buddy Holly's 75th Birthday today and I am thrilled to see so much international attention. I needed recap his incredible contribution, and two recent tributes (the other is the new "Rave On" with another interesting mixture of contemporary artists.

Both of these new, 2011 tribute CDs have some highlights, and which songs you see as the highlights may vary from me! But do yourself a favor and check out what I think is the best of the tributes to Buddy, the 1996 "Not Fadeaway": Remembering Buddy Holly." The CD includes The Band, Marty Stuart, Mary Chapin Carpenter, The Mavericks, Steve Earle, Waylon Jennings, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, and (appropriately) the Hollies who created a new back track to add to a guide vocal of Buddy himself on "Peggy Sue Got married." A little more country flavored, to my ears a generally more balanced and pleasing tribute. It's available here through iTunes and there's not reason not to harvest all three tributes and make your own Best of The Tribute Covers to Buddy Holly.

Rock on!
