Album Review

Amy Grant's ex-husband has had a solid career in contemporary Christian music, as this solid 15-track compilation attests. His rich voice overcomes even the corniest tune, like the opening track, "A Man After Your Own Heart," but he does have a tendency on "Outside" to be the faithful version of Gordon Lightfoot. He gives a country gospel twist to Rich Mullins' classic "Elijah," and modulates his voice between tender and edgy, depending on the genre-slant of the tune. His rasp on the blues-country hoedown "Gospel Ship" is about as good as CCM gets. Elsewhere, there are anthems, family-oriented story songs, and affirmations of God's power in his life. Diversity is Chapman's trademark, and usually the quirky tunes are more interesting than the slick mainstream pop — yet his message is on target for his market. The collection closes with an emotional reading of the modern Christmas classic "Mary Did You Know?" Overall, a good retrospective of one of CCM's staple artists, and a strong introduction for those as yet unfamiliar.

Happy as Crap

Gary Chapman is a really good singer song writer in his own right and I bet he is happy as crap to have his album review start off with "Amy Grant's ex-husband..." Oh well. He has some really good songs that ARE NOT on this album! Everyday Man, Part of Heaven, Your Love Stays with Me. Seek those out.

This is a great introduction to Chapman's music

If you've never heard of Gary Chapman, then you're probably new to CCM. Skipping the history lesson, just listen. If you can get your hands on "Everyday Man", "Shelter", "Outside" and "The Light Inside", then you'll know pretty much what you need to know about this gifted singer/songwriter. His MySpace page has a few other tunes on it and from what I've heard, they're great. For me, the 2 best songs that made me really like his voice are Mike Reid's "Your Love Stays With Me" and John Hiatt's "Love Like Blood" from "Everyday Man" and they aren't even on this collection. And that's not even getting to his own stuff. "Sweet Jesus", "Daddy Cut My Hair", "Nothing Without You", "Heal Me", "Anything's Possible", "Finally", they all strike a chord. He's a great songwriter. Forget what you know or don't about his personal life and appreciate the artist. Oh, and say a prayer for him and his family. And for me, too. Everybody needs prayer. Just listen to "Back Where I Started" and thank God that Gary Chapman writes songs.

the best song on the album

daddy cut my hair is an awesome tune. please check that one out, it's so great
