The bad news is that the folks at Sonic Past Music chose to begin this Millennium compilation with a demo version of “Prelude” sans drums, instead of the awesome finished take where the finely tuned mix of bombastic beats reveals a production way ahead of its 1968 origin. But other than that, Pieces is the best-compiled representation of the Millennium next to the extensive three-disc box entitled Magic Time released on Sundazed Records in 2001. The early incarnation of “To Claudia On Thursday” is just as magic in its embryonic form as it was when finished and mixed — it defined the short-lived sunshine-pop movement from the mid-'60s to the early '70s, characterized by airtight harmonies and smiling melodies. The stripped-down take on “I Just Don’t Know How to Say Goodbye” is another standout, as it bobs and floats on the otherworldly vocal harmonies of Joey Stec, Curt Boettcher, Lee Mallory, Sandy Salisbury and Michael Fennelly. “Suspend Animation” incorporates Spanish-tinged guitars with a Byrds-y jangle to make for something that sounds both new and vaguely familiar.

beautiful pieces to completion

4 out of 5 stars, for being a supplement only, still a brilliant thing offered by itunes. these are also-rans and 4 demo versions of song that ended up on "begin". potential buyers should be aware they will not be duplicating any exact tracks from 'begin' here...prelude, claudia, it's you, it won't always be the same, are all early demo versions and not the same as the Lp versions. 60s pop music with production and technique ahead of its time. Notable gorgeous tunes stand out here as LP worthy, "I just don't know how to say goodbye" with its free and easy lilt and start to finish tambourine jingle, "onece upon a time" featuring a nice walk-down progression and maturing pop songwriting style, "how much I love you" a kind of soothing drone of relaxation, a meditative piece. Curt's voice stands out as being so pretty, more forceful than his early folk work with goldebriars or later contemporaries sagittarius, on songs like "share with me".Also "baby it's real" which gets a thankfully stripped-down treatment (probably another demo?) that differs from the version on the Curt Boettcher LP that features his early solo work. the real surprise for me here was "suspend animation" which has a beautiful melody paired with a rather strange and clumsy story of a man travelling through space with his "brothers and sisters" frozen for the journey,among these his 'true love', all of them destined for their 'new world' since the old world apparantly wanted to turn them into human androids. Hey, it was the 60s. Still the song has such pretty acoustic guitar you will be hard pressed not to love it. This is a thoroughly enjoyable record and a complete steal of a download,21 songs for 9.99.
