Album Review

After releasing several competent but more or less undistinguished albums on Capitol, Sammy Hagar switched to Geffen in 1981 and released Standing Hampton, a polished but tough record that showed a surprising amount of pop songcraft. The added production gloss and improved melodic sense proved commercially successful — the album was his first million-seller and it cracked the Top 30 — and artistically successful as well; the record was the most consistent and memorable album he had recorded to date, featuring the singles "I'll Fall in Love Again," "Baby's on Fire," and "There's Only One Way to Rock."

Standing The Test of Time

This is by far the best rock album (yes album) of the 80's. Sammy is a true artist, and I am so pleased he is solo again. Van Halen rocks, but Sammy by himself is so much more, better and not overshadowed by the brothers. Every time I hear Can't Get Loose, it takes me bake to Lodi mid high school, early 80's on a Friday night hanging out on a country road shooting out the lights and drinking strawberry wine with my friends. In fact this entire album is an instant smile everytime I play it. Of course now the album is a CD, but it still rocks and is not outdated one bit even though 20 + years have gone by. You rock Sammy! Hey I tunes where is his new stuff??? Sam I Am! Thanks, Ali

Great Hagar

This is a great album from beginning to end. Saw this tour twice. He played just about everything from it. Contains a few songs that he still performs 20+ years later. My favorites: Heavy Metal, Sweet Hitchhiker and the cover of Piece of My Heart. Essential for anyone just getting into the Red Rocker.

Great Rock and Roll

Before Van Halen Sammy Hagar had a great solo career. This is IMO his finest album. From first to last cut he delivers very strong rock songs. In particular, Heavy Metal from the movie of the same name is a standout. The cover of Janis Joplin's Piece of My Heart is a great tribute to the late singer and a rendition of whch I am sure she would be proud. The rest of the songs are as good though perhaps not quite as memorable. In short, this is an album that should be in any serious rocker's collection.

After spending several years as the lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist for the mid-'70s hard rock band Montrose, Sammy Hagar began a solo career that produced several hits and made him an album rock favorite. Hagar became a true star once he joined Van Halen in 1985, but he'd been a popular hard rocker ever since his first album with Montrose. After giving up a boxing career, Hagar began singing in the late '60s, performing with various California bands including Skinny, the Fabulous Catillas, Justice...
