iTunes Editors’ Notes

Ten years after the release of Interpol's debut album, Turn on the Bright Lights, a remastered edition with 17 bonus cuts lets fans hear it with superior sound. There are also early EP cuts, b-sides, demos, and Peel Sessions in perfect context, including five tracks never before released. Interpol's obvious debt to Joy Division is readily apparent in the first demos of "Roland" and "Get the Girls/Song 5," as well as the official album cuts "Stella Was a Diver and She Was Always Down" and "Leif Erikson." However, it's only one piece of Interpol's sonic palette. While the band prefers the serrated post-punk edge of the early '80s over, say, the generic guitar distortion of the '90s grunge era, it's often to substantial personal effect. "Say Hello to the Angels" sounds like a much angrier band stretching out The Smiths. "Gavilan/Cubed" has never previously been issued in any version; it's an ethereal piece up to Interpol's standards.

One of the leading post-punk revivalists of the 2000s and 2010s, Interpol took their cues from Joy Division and the Chameleons, fashioning a darkly atmospheric sound helmed by intricate guitars and Paul Banks' somber baritone. The group also had a striking visual presence marked by the members' fondness for suits, which only strengthened their stately, British-influenced appeal. Nevertheless, the band remained rooted in America, where guitarist Daniel Kessler and drummer Greg Drudy first struck up...
