EDITORS’ NOTES

Arguably one of Miles Davis’ greatest collaborators, thanks to his arrangements on several landmark albums for the trumpeter, pianist Gil Evans steps out on his own on this fantastic 1961 collection. The expansive “La Nevada” is as good as anything from Davis’ Birth of the Cool, while the soulful “Where Flamingos Fly” is a gem that features stunning trombone work from Jimmy Knepper. It’s also a touchstone for jazz arrangers and large-band composers—and it sounds as fresh and current now as it did then.
