iTunes Review

Steve Winwood was a musician's musician when he was just a teenager, and his work with The Spencer Davis Group, Blind Faith, and Traffic ensured that he belonged on the shortlist of elite rock and soul musicians. Arc of a Diver, released at the end of 1980, was his second solo album, written with help from Will Jennings, Vivian Stanshall, and George Flemming and performed and produced by Winwood himself at his home studio. The opening cut, "While You See a Chance," was a sizable pop hit and began Winwood's rise as a successful solo performer in the '80s. This album is a tight mix of polished R&B and funky pop. Winwood's sweet and soulful voice cuts through the glitz and glamor of the impeccable musicianship and turns songs such as "Arc of a Diver," "Spanish Dancer," and "Dust" into compelling tunes. This deluxe edition includes the single edit of the title track, an instrumental version of "Night Train," and a BBC Radio 2 documentary that tells his story with input from Muff Winwood, Van Morrison, Will Jennings, Jim Capaldi, and others.

The Steve Winwood Story Begins

This is kind of Stevie's second solo release to the mainstream. There are a few that came before such as Winwood - A Collection (Lp only) and the great but nowhere to be seen "Go" Pt - 1&2 with Stomu Yamashta. This albums beats are a little dated but the music still holds up.

A step forward that connects!

An amazing record and ahead of it's time. An interesting juxtaposition of soulful musicality against an icy, synth, beatbox, home studio production. The result is a sound full of a human touch often absent in records with this instrumental approach. A great step forward for an artist known for his "classic soul" style. "Night Train" and "Spanish Dancer" are personal faves.

18 To 54

I was 18 years old when I bought this album. It's one of my all time favorite records of all time, and its every bit as good today as it was then.

Today, at 54, it still brings me joy. Thank you Steve Winwood

As a solo artist, Steve Winwood is primarily associated with the highly polished blue-eyed soul-pop that made him a star in the '80s. Yet his turn as a slick, upscale mainstay of adult contemporary radio was simply the latest phase of a long and varied career, one that's seen the former teenage R&B shouter move through jazz, psychedelia, blues-rock, and progressive rock. Possessed of a powerful, utterly distinctive voice, Winwood was also an excellent keyboardist who remained an in-demand session...
