A stunning production preserved on a captivating and well-produced live cast album EP
HADESTOWN is the show that I've continued to think about... a folk opera by Anaïs Mitchell retelling the tale of Orpheus & Eurydice... I saw the show's off-Broadway run at New York Theatre Workshop the weekend it closed and I witnessed something I thought was magical, chilling, and haunting, even knowing how the tale eventually ends. I was captivated by the in-the-round(ish) staging, audience interaction (Persephone sang to me in the second row during her Act II opener), Rachel Chavkin's direction, the music, and nuanced performances by the amazing cast. I would definitely love to see this show again, but until then an EP has been released of songs from the show in advance of the complete original cast recording - to be released in 2017 - which was recorded LIVE with Stephen Sondheim in attendance. Take a listen to samples, but I encourage you to buy it because Variety called this "the next great musical theatre obsession" and it truly is. This show deserves a second life... #HadesHead
Even Better Than the Original
I had the opportunity to see NYTW's production of Hadestown, and having been a fan of the concept album for years--I was blown away. The music, the staging... it was indescribable. I've been dying for an album ever since, especially with all the new songs that were added. This album captures the live spirit of the performance beautifully, and I hope they release more songs soon!
Amazing music from incredible production
HADESTOWN is hands down the best musical I've seen this year - Anaïs Mitchell's music and storytelling is simply fantastic - I went back to New York Theatre Workshop three times to experience the show, I couldn't stay away. The live original cast recording captures the breathtaking music and acting talent directed by the extraordinary Rachel Chavkin. Listen to the music and keep your fingers crossed that HADESTOWN returns to another stage soon.
