Fresh New Music: Parke Avery (A Review)

Parke Avery's self-titled debut solo album is full of honest, soulful music and is well worth your time and money. It is a DEFINITE must own.

The album starts off with the epic tune Begin Again. This is the perfect opener for the album. The bigness of this song welcomes you into the world that Parke is creating for this album. I love the appropriateness of opening the album with a song about starting fresh. For me, this song has become a sort of anthem for my current season of life as I am moving towards a wedding next summer.

The second track on the EP is the title track Wishful Thinking. This song jumps out at you with its Irish Jig undertones. The addition of the strings in the background really enhances the fullness of the tune. Thematically, Parke takes us from the idea of starting fresh to this song, which calls us to be participants in our lives. He challenges us with the bridge, "Don't just stand there and blink, dance and sing."

Following two big, bright songs is perhaps the darkest, and most haunting song on the album called Adele. This song is a unique look from the other side of the music industry. It shines light on the difficulty of being an artist in a sea of artists. But more than that, I feel that this song speaks to any kind of parasitic relationship that one has in life. The kind of relationship that you know is bad for you but you can't seem to run away from for one reason or another.

The fourth song on the album, Reaching, is simply a song of struggle. Another rather haunting song in its own right, Reaching expresses the tension musically as much as it does lyrically. This song speaks to being pulled in two different directions and struggling to see what the right direction is.

The album closes as appropriately as it opened. Goodbye is the perfect bookend in name, sound, and meaning. The ghostly vocals set the heartbroken tone of these gut wrenching lyrics. This song is a honest, yet reflective look at severed relationships. The pain and perspective provided in the closing moments of the album tie a nice bow on this masterpiece.

A fresh of breath air

There's something soothing about this album - Avery understands how to keep the lyrical qualities highlighted without filling his music with synthetic sounds and cacophonous rhythms. Subtle yet powerful.

Wishful Thinking

I got to hear these songs almost a year ago. Ever since then I have been waiting for this EP. I love this music!!!
