Customer Reviews

Embarrassing

It's not that I disagree with the sentiment. It's just that the writing is so heavy-handed and pedantic, and the music deeply uninteresting. Like so many of Crow's recent moves, this song just seems a pure commercial play. Ultimately, those of us who've been Crow's fans since the beginning of her solo career aren't interested in her politics; she has nothing particularly original or insightful to say on that score. What we liked was really strong songwriting, great hooks, soulful singing, and at least the appearance of authenticity. I don't think she's had any of those things for a few years now, and as a result, her career is on life support; she's been reduced to doing corporate gigs on private jets. (And, while this may be a little unfair, the whole Lance Armstrong thing--ugh.) I'd still love to see a return to form from Sheryl Crow, but it would mean digging deep for her and taking chances in a way that she hasn't for several albums now. I'm not optimistic.

Continuing on Soha31's Review...

Not only do I agree with everything in that review, I also find it odd that, for a song about the strength and competence -- the "arrival", if you will -- of women, the artwork for the song shows a stereotypically-razor-thin-skinny pair of legs. Because, after all ladies, staying thin is still Job One. She managed to both uplift and denegrate women in one shot. Talent.

Always Interesting, That Sheryl Crow

Instantly reminded of Loretta Lynn's style of song-writing, and delighted to hear the Loretta reference in the lyrics towards the end of the track. Sheryl's a great songwriter and I love that she's willing to take chances and just put a single out there for the joy of songwriting and creative expression! Kudos to Sheryl.

Biography

Born: February 11, 1962 in Kennett, MO

Genre: Pop

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

Sheryl Crow's fresh, updated spin on classic roots rock made her one of the most popular mainstream rockers of the '90s. Her albums were loose and eclectic on the surface, yet were generally tied together by polished, professional songcraft. Crow's sunny, good-time rockers and world-weary ballads were radio staples for much of the '90s, and she was a perennial favorite at Grammy time. Although her songwriting style was firmly anchored to the rock tradition, she wasn't a slave to it — her free-associative,...
