Wood (Live)

Wood (Live)

This live collection is from the band's 2012 acoustic tour, featuring gigs in Washington, D.C.; Aspen, Colo; Denver; and Atlanta. Col. Bruce Hampton joins in for a passionate take on the classic folk-blues track "Fixin' to Die," while the band does its best on The Beatles' "The Ballad of John and Yoko," Sonny Boy Williamson's "Good Morning Little School Girl," and Jimmy Cliff's perennial "Many Rivers to Cross." Real magic ignites in the hypnotic weave of the band's classic "Mercy," where the drones cast a warm, enduring spell. "Imitation Leather Shoes" speeds up the tempo but remains a pleasant shuffle, with a mellowness that captures an instrumental edge. The band's catalog is reinterpreted to fit the acoustic format, and like any jam band worth its reputation, Widespread Panic showcases an interplay that turns the songs into springboards for inspired instrumental chops. "Tall Boy," for example, is both a great tune and a player's paradise.
