In sandwich shops, cafe's, bars, lunch counters, taverns and pubs, most anywhere there's a jukebox, Merle Haggard songs are playing... After hearing of his passing ..I started off listening to Silver Wings - I Think I'll Just Stay Here and Drink- Always Wanting You (just added it) a duet with Ray Charles ...hearing the Bottle Let Me Down...and catching up on so many more. His Shows were something else - heard/saw him and the Strangers early on. That was a time when ladies were always excited to hear Conway's voice, just plain flat out excited to see Waylon, and always excited to attend a Merle Haggard show because they could go with their husbands / boyfriends who also really liked his music. (even in pre Muskogee times) Take a Lot of Pride In What I Am - an anthem to American freedom and hobo's..Mama's Hungry Eyes -Mama Tried - and Workin' Man Blues would get a lot of cheers. Combine that with all the " drinking to get over you " songs and you had a real show. A genuine gem among his many many albums is Same Train, a Different Time (1969) . A two disc album saluting the singing brakeman, Jimmie Rodgers. 25 songs and narrations including Blue Yodel's 4 , 6, & 8 of a dozen written by the American Icon. As the Hag explains when Rodgers passed away in 1933 fans turned out at all the whistle stops as he took that final journey from NY to Mississippi. ( Agnes, my go to gal for all matters musical, has been known to let loose with a sweet yodel on occasion ) Way off I see some of those shining wings moving against a clear blue sky knowing there'll always be a Merle Haggard song as near as the next jukebox.

As a performer and a songwriter, Merle Haggard was the most important country artist to emerge in the 1960s, and he became one of the leading figures of the Bakersfield country scene. While his music remained hardcore country, he pushed the boundaries of the music quite far. Like his idol, Bob Wills, his music was a melting pot that drew from all forms of traditional American music -- country, jazz, blues, and folk -- and in the process, developed a distinctive style of his own. As a performer, singer,...
