iTunes Editors’ Notes

There are two reissues of Aeroplane Flies High: the standard 33-track collection and the deluxe edition, which tops off at 90 tracks. The deluxe set adds demos, live tracks, and rehearsals that hardcore fans will surely find of interest, while the standard issue is more for the moderate fanatic who misses the band but doesn’t think that lower-fidelity recordings or songs in their primitive states are necessary to understand the final versions. Either way, each “chapter” of the collection starts with a single from the Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness album—“Bullet with Butterfly Wings,” “1979,” “Zero,” “Tonight, Tonight,” “Thirty-Three”—and then follows with the b-sides and other rarities from the period. The deluxe version goes further into demos, rehearsals, etc. Especially interesting are the covers of The Cars (“You’re All I’ve Got Tonight”), The Cure (“A Night Like This”), and Blondie (“Dreaming”). The deluxe edition has an 8-track demo of “Zero” and the expanded version of “Silverf***,” which includes a few surprises in its 34-minute duration.

1990s Revisited

Billy...thank you for releasing all of these songs/albums from Gish thru TAFH. It takes courage, I think, to put out these songs in a stripped-down format.

TAFH set is as good as if not better than MCIS.

Next up...Adore?

For any fan even remotely interested in the Pumpkins there's certainly something here to love and cherish forever. 🎃

PS...James, stop being a douche. Recognize the part you played and embrace it. I'm not saying reunite but shutting the door on some of the greatest music of the 90s is just dumb. Pick up the phone and send a text. I think Billy has found his peace and you should, too. Be the bigger man. Billy tried. It's now your turn.

Aeroplane Flies High

Biography

Formed: 1988 in Chicago, IL

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

Of all the major alternative rock bands of the early '90s, Smashing Pumpkins were the group least influenced by traditional underground rock. Lead guitarist/songwriter Billy Corgan fashioned an amalgam of progressive rock, heavy metal, goth rock, psychedelia, and dream pop, creating a layered, powerful sound driven by swirling, distorted guitars. Corgan was wise enough to exploit his angst-ridden lyrics, yet he never shied away from rock star posturing, even if he did cloak it in allegedly ironic...
