About Hugo Alfvén
Swedish composer Hugo Alfvén's (1872-1960) standing as a late Romantic nationalist was analogous to that of Edvard Grieg in Norway, Jean Sibelius in Finland, and Carl Nielsen in Denmark. He frequently drew on Swedish folklore, history, and landscapes for inspiration, and his most frequently performed work is his first Swedish rhapsody, Midsommervaka, or Midsummer Vigil. Although he wrote a large quantity of vocal and choral music, he is best remembered for his orchestral works, which include tone poems, five symphonies, and three Swedish rhapsodies. In addition to composing, Alfvén was prominent as a violinist, conductor, painter, and writer.
