See Ya!

Well, the dreaded day is almost here. The day I knew was coming. The day they shutdown Zite, my all-time favorite iPhone app. Wow! I was going to post a long, snarky review about it, but really what's the point? It's a done deal. Just another of life's many disapointments. Instead of that, immediately after posting THIS review -- two full weeks before Zite's scheduled shutdown date -- I will immediately delete BOTH Zite (because I'm mad at the original owner for being a sell out) AND Flipboard (because it's just another crappy application) from my iPhone and start getting all my news articles from the new Apple News app (which isn't great but is far better than Flipboard) instead until something better comes along, which we all know will happen eventually; it's just a matter if time. In fact, someone is probably working on it as I write this review (note to developers: while I can't speak for other Zite enthusiasts, I would be willing to PAY for another news app that's as good as Zite). But I will NEVER use Zite OR Flipboard again from this day forward. I'm sick of the entire, sad situation. See Ya!

Flipboard < Zite

Update: With Zite closing on December 7, I will be deleting this app from my phone. The new iPhone news feed is way better than Flipboard, but I am sad to see Zite go. A far superior app to flipboard it was.

Original: From a clunky display (max 3 stories before I have to flip?), to a less intuitive design, this app is far less efficient than zite. It assumes I am going to read every article it recommends, which is absurd. The incessant flipping is also enough to make anyone nauseous. Zite was clean. Zite was relevant. Zite allowed me to be exposed to the maximum amount of news stories in the shortest amount of time. Just because we have the technology to "flip" stuff doesn't mean you should design a whole UI based off it. When flipboard bought Zite they should have realized what the superior product was and changed to that format. Now I'm forced to go find another source of information that doesn't take 6 hours to flip through to find something I want to read.

Yes, I'm another sad long term Zite user. I've tried flipboard on and off since it launched, and it's never been as good. Confusing and inconsistent navigation that's never been substantially updated, with the tired and worn out metaphor of "flipping" you're now stuck with because it's your name. An article suggestion engine that never has worked as well as Zite's. Interstitial ads. An overall organization focused on a magazine-like experience assuming I want to explore known content, not magically stumble across new content. There has been no evidence that acquiring Zite's technology led to any inclusion of their article suggestion algorithm in Flipboard. A focus on a social experience rather than just organizing some interesting articles for me. Flipboard remains woefully overrated. I suspect it only really managed to buy Zite rather than the other way around because they figured out how to monetize better. Too bad apple's news app is mostly worse.
