Description

Joining the Citizen safety network will give you instant access to information about crimes near you. The Citizen technology will send you real-time push notifications to alert you of crimes that are close. Users write to us every day telling us how Citizen is changing how they engage with their neighborhoods. Citizen notifications have prompted users to evacuate burning buildings, deter school buses from departing a school during a nearby terrorist attack, or even rescue their neighbor’s baby locked in a hot car.

You may receive a notification of a crime in progress before the police have responded. This app is meant to keep you safe and protect you. Please use Citizen responsibly.

Real-time Alerts: Location-based notifications help you avoid potentially dangerous situations.

Live Video: Go live from the scene or watch an incident unfold from different angles.

Incident Details: Receive continuous updates on incidents and chat with other Citizen users.

What's New

Version 0.912.0

BIG NEWS:
This update introduces two of our most requested features!

• Have you ever wanted to receive alerts for incidents near your home while you’re at work or school, or vice versa? (I know I have!) You can now find, follow, and receive alerts for an unlimited number of communities, no matter where you are. To find communities in your city, just tap the top left corner to open the “Location Search” menu. Type the community name in the search bar and hit “Follow.” When you follow a community, you’ll receive select notifications for escalating and confirmed incidents happening there.

• Have you wanted to be able to look up older, historical incidents? Now, when exploring a community page, you can scroll through a feed of the past 500 incidents that occurred there. You can also discuss local incidents and trends with fellow community members in the chat. Bonus: You can also use the handy search tool from the Location Search menu to explore incidents in other communities, chat and more!

Bug Fixes

• We fixed issues with the in-app notifications that drop down from the top while you’re using the app. They should be working again.

Cute idea for the paranoid 2000s

In many ways this is a clever app. Nice graphics, pretty well laid out and it does notify on seemingly random events in random areas. It does this with a startling alert that isn’t configurable, so it jumps your adrenaline to the roof to let you know that 7 miles away from you a hobo yelled at someone pestering them.

Basically I leave it installed hoping they will tone it down and eventually get more granular and give better options for alerts. Let ME pick the sound, let me choose the areas I’m interested in and the “level” of attention I should give it (I.e. gang of people shooting up the neighborhood vs. a person fell on sidewalk). Maybe an alert for the area like Tsunami or nuclear warning. Or for real crime- an alert for someone kicking out tenants so they can list their home as a hotel on AirBnB.

Right now it’s a blunt tool with the associated problems of being a blunt tool. Some good crime voyeurism to be had for sure, but without much relevance to people’s day-to-day it will eventually fade away.

I love this app this is my second review but would like to thank you for all the updates it has been improved. There is something that would be great, it would benefit us all. The alerts for nearby incidents are helpful but would like favorite location alerts as many as we can. Would like to know alerts that I should be aware of near my children’s school, my husbands, and parents home, work area not only where I’m located. So we can pinpoint favorite locations five would be awesome or more. That way we get alerted of situations instead of us looking through map and seeing if anything alerts were on those specific areas daily. Thank you again hope we can add that to this app soon

Pretty good app

This app is somewhat helpful. The 2 glitches I find are: when it alerts you by sound to nearby problem, it is sometimes hard to read the details before the report disappears on phone lock screen. When you try to find the report using the app button, often it isn’t there.
The other problem is the writing which tells you when & where a previous incident was. The writing is very faint white and is almost impossible to read, especially outside in bright light.

Updated review: I still have this installed, but it really has limited value. I feel like you don’t know the area well enough— if I live in San Francisco, data from Mountain View, Berkeley and Oakland is not relevant. Maybe on a map that looks close, but it isn’t at all.
