Ratings and Reviews
Film selection = A, Functionality = C-
A = Kanopy offers a fine and broad selection of films, many not found on other streaming platforms (although dropping the Criterion Collection was a bit disappointing). They partner with libraries, allowing users with those accounts to view up to 10 films each month at no charge. C- = But the app has always presented with problems. Scrolling is never smooth (searching the database, adding to watch lists, reading film notes) because screens snap back into original position. CC titles are off by a considerable margin or freeze altogether. Controls (reverse, pause) require multiple hits (using finger or stylus) before responding; ultimately, closing the app might be the way of to go. Some films never play, yet register against the allotted 10 as if they have. (I tried to watch “Coda” multiple times; it played for all of 9 seconds.) Associated library accounts are inactivated for no apparent reason, with no clear path to reactivation. (Ironically, it was in activating another library account, that I was then able to reactivate the first.) There are fine streaming apps out there; Kanopy needs to take lessons from those for an A+ product.
Thank you for your comment! We've improved the activation function on the app. Please let us know if you are still seeing any issues with this or have any additional feedback.
Couldn’t be more convenient!
I just got this app today after reading about it in the AARP
(hey, don’t judge!) newsletter. I already am using the Libby app to access new and old audio, narrated, and print books free from the combined library system. I know my nearby library is full of movies but I never get them there because I’d just have to take them back soon. This app gave me a chance to have a film for 3 days with no bother returning it. I’d been wanting to see Colin Hanks’ documentary about Tower Records since it was released a couple of years ago. It was easy to sign up and it’s easy to browse the titles, which are divided by genres, and I spotted it there. It was easy to load and watch using my Apple TV and it looked just like regular movie quality. All I needed was my Seattle public library card number to sign up for this system. No downside that I can see for a freebie...5 stars!
Saw it three times . Each time it gets to me a little bit more. Direction was fabulous, acting superb. A little hard to understand because I am an American, but that was to be expected had to use close captioning to truly understand it something about first world war is so unnerving and frightening that I never get tired of understanding it or exploring. This was a play, that’s obvious And I wish I had seen the play. But since I haven’t I will make do with the film. I think I loved it but to be honest I’m not sure. Very intelligent film and thank God for that because I haven’t seen a very intelligent film in years. I hope to see more like this with its human guts churning and boiling over to let me know that mankind still exist on this earth
