for what it is it’s not worth the price

The app has a very interesting Interface, however the features seem very stripped and bare. No layers < least from what I could see, no optoins to adjust the interface or move things around. Its just a strait up drawing app and nothing else. It seems like a app that should be free in the first place. I’ve already seen lots of apps on the market that offer what this app dose but don’t cost a monty subscription. I can’t justify the cost for what little it is. Creativity for sure but it seems aimed at someone who is just starting out to draw. It seems to just be a rehash of art set or drawing pad.. I do understand that the infinite canvas is why they went with no layers but the Concepts app did the same thing and has both. They also have a subscription model that offers things like a whole constantly building library of assists to access like adobes and payable features that stay unlocked forever. Even sketchbook when it was not free offered a reason to get the subscription. I will say I am in love with out the color system is laid out and how it even goes to naming them. Something nice to see that I don’t in other apps. For now I will not be subbing until maybe the app offers more. Just too many alternatives that do the same thing for far less. I don’t understand how this app made the front page of the App Store being apps we love. kudos to the dev I guess.

Hi Silviyius,

Thanks for your thoughtful feedback. We are a small team that has worked hard for almost 2 years to design and build Flow. We’ve had a great launch, and now we are looking forward to what is ahead as we grow the app together with our users - something that’s made possible by subscription. We’ve made some very deliberate design choices about what Flow does and doesn’t do, I hope you get to use it more and discover how those decisions impact your workflow and creativity. (Also I recommend checking out the guide to find out more about how to customise the UI). Glad to hear you love the color system, front page worthy! -NH

Great sketchbook replacement

I’ve been using the app for a week now and have found that Flow has been a great digital sketchbook. My sketchbooks are mostly for notes, wireframes, or sketches for illustration and product ideas. It’s customizable enough that I can sketch out the ideas quickly without having to think about the tool itself. The ability to have the document expand horizontally has been a huge plus.

I understand the issues others have about not being able to use it to create finished artwork like Procreate, not having the precision and vector abilities as Concepts, not having the advanced capabilities of those other apps, and having to pay a subscription. I don’t think they should be compared to each other, they each have their value and uses. The subscription model is not that big of an issue for me. I don’t expect the team to continue developing and improving the app without getting compensated. This also saves me money from having to continually buy new sketchbooks.

I gave 4 stars because I feel like there are improvements that can be made and are probably being worked on - like importing images for example.

Hi jane_ee, thanks for the great review! Really glad to hear the things we designed Flow to do are working so well for you - your thoughts are on point! (Everyone on the team has just read your review and there are lot of thumbs up and nodding happening here.)

You're right there are definitely lots of cool improvements being worked on right now (your suggestion included) - make sure you put any other things you want on the feature request board!

Excellent sketchbook app

I’ve been wanting a sketchbook app for such a long time! One where you open it up and start sketching, and just swipe to advance through pages in much the same way as you would with a physical sketchbook. Moleskine used to have a great little sketchbook app a few years ago and I’m super glad they’ve reintroduced a greatly superior version.

One of my favorite things about this app is its simplicity. Sure, in some ways it might be too simple (like other users, there are a few more options I would like to see regarding tools, some of which I’ve posted in the in-app feature requests forum), but it seems like the developers are open to adding new things if enough users want them. I think it is important to remember that this app isn’t trying to be a fully-featured replacement for a painting application, but rather a sketchbook application containing approximations of the tools you’d reasonably cycle through carrying around in real life.

Some folks have complained that the app doesn’t allow layers but I must say that I kind of love that. Instead, they provide a selective eraser — you can sketch in pencil, then ink your sketch and delete the pencil only, for example. I like that this keeps the interface simple, and also matches the way I work on paper.

Paying the subscription was a no-brainer, by the way. It’s a niche product and it is *very* in my niche.

Hi Cambienta, thanks for the really thoughtful review! Great to hear it's working so well for you - we thought long and hard about the design, especially about many of the features we've all become accustomed to in drawing apps that get in the way of our creative flow. We are certainly more than open to adding new things, thanks so much for your support and for getting involved with the feature request forum!
