iOS 5 killed it

Proactive Dad

I live in Eastern Ukraine and rely on this dictionary in my daily life around the city. Dictionary is quite thorough, but it lacks a lot of technical terminology. It has car words such as engine and transmission, but not much more detail than that. If you are talking with a mechanic about your car, it will be of little help. Other specific and detailed conversations will go beyond its capabilities as well. It covers most medical ailments, some legal terms, and some scientific words, but not enough to help you through an educated conversation. The "flash card" is a nice feature. This one lacks the "cases and conjugation of verbs tables" that I have seen in some of the other expensive electronic dictionary apps. All-in-all, this was a good app until iOS 5 came out. Now it is dead as the dictionary is nothing but gibberish. I am patiently waiting on Collins do fix this bug so that I can use it again.

I bought this one as it had the largest dictionary. In comparison, the extra words could just be fluff. I would look for one that has the "conjugation of verbs" and "word endings for different cases" tables in them. It will make your conversation a lot more understandable to native Russian speakers.

Better than a book, finds any form of a word

This dictionary is not shabby at all. It compares very well to the electronic Oxford and like it also has declension and conjugation charts for the entries. Large lexicon. Has many extras (input by Cyrillic handwriting, verb tables, pronunciation helps, etc.). A version of this Collins dictionary is also available as an in-app purchase with the Slovoed app, but I like to have it as a stand alone and use it as often as Oxford.

An adequate dictionary but...

Oxford was better and more thorough with Russian pronunciation guidelines, declension/conjugation tables and definitions.
