What's New

Version 4.3.4

Two truths and a lie, Transit edition:

1. We got rid of a bug where our British GPS robot “Daniel” started speaking random garbage in your ear.

2. We got rid of a bug where departures were disappearing from our schedule view like a David Blaine trick gone horribly wrong.

3. New York bagels are better than Montreal bagels.

Spot the lie? Tweet your best guess to @transitapp. And don’t forget to rate us five stars—because while our release notes may only be 66.66666% true, when it comes to transit times, we’re much, much better.

Great app, heavy GPS usage

Ann O Nymous

This app is very good, with a great UI and features, along with reliable tracking for every kind of public transportation in NYC. I’ve been using it for a few years and have seen it improve a lot, and I recommend it to a lot of friends and coworkers.

My only issue is that I use Transit mainly for bus service, using the GO! feature. I love the feature, but it doesn’t stop using GPS until I go back into Transit and tell it to stop using GO! to track me. This happens whether I set a destination stop or not, and even when I’ve walked blocks away from any bus stops. I’ve taken my phone out of my pocket even 20-30 minutes after getting off the bus, only to see the blue banner at the top telling me that Transit is still using my location.

While I don’t really like what that might mean for tracking users, my main concern is the battery drain - which is already usually around 10% for a 20 minute bus ride. I keep using the feature because I like the idea of helping others out via crowdsourcing, but this is definitely a big negative aspect to doing so. Hope it can be changed in the future!

Developer Response

Hi there, thank you for taking the time to leave such a detailed review. It's great to hear that you like the UI and tracking! We really appreciate your support over the years. You mention that GO keeps tracking you until you tell it not go. Generally speaking, once your trip is over and you get to your destination, your GO trip should end and Transit should stop using your location. It sounds like even after you've reached your destination, or long after you've disembarked, GO is still tracking you. Does that sound right? This sounds like a bug. Would you be able to send us an email through the About section of Transit? That way, we'll get some debugging information so we can take a closer look at what's going on. As well, we want to make it easier for you to stop GO from the notification screen of your iPhone, so stay tuned!

Was great

Note: it WAS great. I could see where the bus was on a map to get a better idea of how far it was and how much time I had to get to my next stop since I jump from bus to bus. Now it won't show up after having this update for a few days on either bus. All I see is how long it'll take to get to my stop. I don’t know if this is a bug or if it's intentional, but please bring it back. It was very useful and was probably the most used feature of the app. Thanks!

Update 10/26:
Responding to the developers, I'm in Louisville, CO and bus route 228 was missing along with multiple instances of route FF1 and FF2. I tried again and the bus appeared on the map right before my stop. So I realized it was actually not removed but the map feature failed intermittently where the bus shows up on the map at times, but other times the map's empty. It still showed their route (although it was grayed out), but the bus icon showing where they were was gone. I thought it had been taken out entirely which is why I was unhappy but if it's a bug then there is hope!

Developer Response

Hey there - what city are you in? We definitely wouldn't ever remove the bus tracking feature without telling you. We know how useful this is! If you can give us some details about which buses are missing, we'll be able to get them back on the map. Thanks!

Faithful throughout time.

I’ve been using this app since my freshman year in high school, and overall it has been a huge life saver in so many instances, especially with the real time tracking. It helped me to figure out how to navigate the busy city streets by myself. Sometimes the tracker is off a bit, and since I like to wait until the last minute, it has caused me to miss a fee busses, but overall a wonderful app. I acknowledge that problems like these are minimal, and I really enjoy the interface.

At one point there was an Apple Watch app for this, until one day it just disappeared from my watch face, and I’ve been trying to get it back ever since. I would really appreciate it if this feature was re added, because my iPhone battery doesn’t cooperate well with cold, while my watch is much more durable. That way when it’s freezing outside, I only have to look at my wrist.

Overall, brilliant app, friendly interface, and it knows how to get you from point A to B
