What's New in Version 2.8
Here's a belated Halloween treat: now introducing version 2.8!
You can now jump into a subcategory directly from the categories filters. This means that you're a few taps closer to bacon (or vegan) themed projects. Happy browsing!
Whenever you come across a Kickstarter project link on the web, it'll open directly in the app.
We've upgraded our 1Password and Facebook login options to provide a seamless login experience.
A few other minor improvements and bug fixes.
Navigation just keeps getting worse.
To move from project-to-project, swipe sideways; that's intuitive and useful. But, if you swipe up or down, you move from category-to-category in an arbitrary and only slightly-sensical order. Here's the problem: the up/down swipe is way, way too sensitive. The slightest angle to your side-to-side swipe sends you off to a whole different category... and there's no easy way to get back to where you were. This is just seriously annoying.
The Kickstarter app also seriously lacks good discovery tools. It's just darn hard for would-be backers to find projects of potential interest to them. And that makes it hard for projects to get backed. Basically, since Kickstarter doesn't help backers find projects, it's up to project creators to actively go out and find backers. For example, I can get a list of all projects based in a specific city...by first finding one project based in that city and clicking on the city name. But that list can only be sorted by "magic" not by newest or ending soonest. And some project categories, "product design," for example, are just way too broad to be useful.
This really could be a lot better.
Why so bad?
There's just no good excuse for this app to be so half-assed. Other reviewers have mentioned the issues with starred projects not syncing, and I miss the ability to search for Nearby projects. I also deeply wish the devs could do something about organizing past projects into categories (didn't fund, active, defaulted/scam, and complete). I've also missed several messages because the app doesn't alert me in app.
Having said that, I notice that a bunch of reviews are about Kickstarter itself and not the app. Don't be an idiot.
Exciting projects by people with tons of talent and expertise, ranging from items that benefit people in the 3rd world and ecology world-wide (solar lights, etc.), to other innovative ideas for password memory and pet minders (Everykey, Petcube) and so much more. I'm proud to be a part of funding and even, sometimes, a small part of testing process.
