Cahokia Mounds Site Tours
By Production Resource, Inc.
This app is only available on the App Store for iOS devices.
Cahokia Mounds is one of 20 World Heritage Sites in the United States. Located in Southern Illinois eight miles east of St. Louis, Cahokia is the largest prehistoric Indian site north of Mexico.
Experience Cahokia as it was 1000 years ago with three multimedia trail tours and an audio tour of the Interpretive Center. This app was designed to help visitors (and non-visitors) understand the context of what they are seeing, orient themselves within the expansive landmark, relate different mounds to one another and experience the ancient stories through visuals and soundtracks.
Here’s the perfect travel guide to take with you to the archaeological site as well as a way to “enjoy a virtual trip” through Ancient America in the comfort of your own home or school. As you unlock the mysteries of the mounds, you’ll understand why continued research here is so important to all of us.
Archaeologists call the Native Americans who built the giant earthen mounds the Mississippians, and Cahokia was their crowning achievement. The population was approximately 10,000 - 20,000 in 1050 AD, with 120 mounds within six square miles at the time.
Produced for the Cahokia Mounds Museum Society with input from noted archaeologists and tribal leaders, the tours have received numerous awards including an esteemed MUSE Award from the American Association of Museums in 2009.
MUSE judges said…
"Strong visual style; exquisite use of unifying graphics, maps and especially 3D animation, to add a pervasive sense of another time with historical information and hypotheses to the present landscape."
"Very well organized with accurate spatial sense; breaks new ground in the difficult art of combining a traditional walking tour with a cutting edge audio/visual tour."
"Cahokia Mounds Site Tours" contains:

What's New in Version 1.1
- Changed app name in the App Store.
- Changed the icon to include "Cahokia"
To the ppl with the sound issues, maybe your mute switch was on? We had no sound until we turned off our phones mute switch, and that worked!
Very informative, comprehensive, wonderful. An essential if you visit the mounds. We were able to get it on site thru the interpretation center's wifi. But don't wait, get it first and listen to a few sections on your way over to get in the mood for mounds.
Worth It, Even For One Time Use!
I used this recently for a solo walk on a day when the Informative Center was closed. Visiting Cahokia was an imperative stop during a long road trip, so I bought this to make the most of my tightly budgeted time.
This is a series of guided walks tied into the site with reference photos (mounds or views from Monks Mound) in the app and guide posts along the trails.
I would suggest buying this app because even though there are information boards posted at each mound, the app has more to it and it was nice to have the information as I walked the grounds.
Since the Informative Center was closed, I can't tell you if this app is already part of a guided tour offered by the park. Their website, and the app, mention something about it.
I was excited to use the app but there's no sound.
