The absolute best
Creating a package of old games like this seems like an effort in futility. There is no way to create the feeling of physical controls on a touchscreen so why would anyone even try? To gain a fast buck would be one reason -- and there are a ton of retro game packages that have done this. If you have been burned by these in the past then Atari's bundle may surprise you.
I am only commenting on the arcade games because that is all I got this for. Of the 18 arcade games, most are vector-based. I am using an iPad 3 and the sharpness of the lines are better than I have ever seen on any other emulator. That alone is probably worth the price of this package.
A lot of time must have been spent on virtualizing the unique feel of the arcade controls. Asteroids has 9 different control layouts -- perhaps one of them is the one that works for you. Is it possible to make a virtual spinner for Tempest? No, but I think the effort done here is laudable, and it feels closer to the arcade experience than anything except having an actual spinner. Try the trackball on the free Missile Command and see if you like it.
2.5 / 5 Stars.
I don't write reviews, but after all of the negative feedback, I felt compelled to offer my own assessment.
Longtime Atari fan...paid for all the games. The games completely downloaded on one iDevice (after alot of error messages), however, I was only able to download about 10 games on another iDevice when I got the "incorrect file size" error message.. As per Atari's suggestion, I tried using other Internet connections (cellular, home wifi and then a different wifi from a local restaurant) and it just won't download. Tried erasing the app, redownloading it and reinstalling the games.. Didn't work..actually, lost all that I had... there needs to be a game distribution redesign here. This is a common problem.
As for the common complaint about controls.. It's a touch device.. I don't know what somebody could be expecting.. These games are not as easy to control now as they were with a joystick, but I figured they wouldn't be, so control meets expectations.
Very good game selection. All the games are here. I would not recommend anyone grabbing all the games for $10 until you see how some of them download for you first. From where I'm sitting, the games will only download on 50% of the iDevices.
For all the people who say you have to get coins for any game(s) you want to play, you actually don't. You can get coins (Which I recommend you don't) OR (Note the "or" in big letters) you can pay $9.99 (or $5.99 for a limited time if you get 1 game) to get all 99 games and get unlimited plays on all of them (Which I highly recommend). Or you can get a game pack of 4 for $0.99 with unlimited play. The reason I wrote this review is because I know Atari doesn't do a good job of explaining this. And to all the people that say the controls are crap, they actually aren't that bad, even though they aren't like the original controls. I hope this helps people understand this app easier and I hope everyone happy Retro Gaming.
