Australian Geology Travel Maps is a phone app that operates offline in the field (ie. without a connection to the internet) and delivers interactive geology maps - tap on the map, and information about the geology at that location is displayed. The geology, terrain, roads, rivers, lakes, towns, rural localities, contours, national parks, forestry reserves, indigenous reserves, and bush-walking tracks for the entire Australian continent are shown on the maps.
A unique feature is the ability for the app to talk to you as you are driving, informing you about the geology whenever there is a change. This is very effective at familiarising you with the geology in an area, and we strongly suggest that you try out this feature during your trial period.
In addition to simplified (1:1 million) geology travel maps, detailed geology maps for Western Australia (1:500k), South Australia (1:100k), Queensland (1:100k & 1:250k), Tasmania (1:25k & 1:250k), and Victoria (1:50k & 1:250k) are available for geologists, engineers and land managers, and only 3 clicks is required to download any of the 360+ phone maps published by the Geological Survey of New South Wales.
Resource overlays are available for every state. Depending on the state, this includes information on the location of metals, minerals, gems, building stone and quarries.
You can download total magnetic intensity (TMI 1VD) images for most of the states, and overlay these as transparencies above the geology maps. The transparency value is fully adjustable via a slider near the bottom of the screen.
Another feature is the ability to download and display data on petroleum, mining and exploration leases and mineral deposits. This is also interactive - tap on the data point or shape boundary and data for that feature is displayed in a list. You can also import your own GIS data into the app, and store tens of thousands of features on your phone, that can be retrieved for display later when you are in the field without internet access.
You can also import your own MBTiles maps – interactive or non-interactive - for example, created with MapTiler or Tilemill. Any interactive MBTiles map becomes a talking map with this app.
The app has a yearly subscription, called 'AGTM core functionalities'. This gives you access to up-to-date simplified and detailed geology terrain maps created by Trilobite Solutions, the ability to download and display up-to-date petroleum, mining and exploration lease and resources data on your phone, a system that speaks to you as you travel telling you about changes in geology. the ability to record your trails and observations and export these to Google Earth, other phones/tablets or your GIS, and the ability to import MBTiles map files and GIS data. On subscribing for the first time, there is an automatic 1-WEEK FREE TRIAL, giving you plenty of time to check this app out in the field before committing to a purchase.
Note the one subscription enables you to run the app on all your iPhones/iPads. It is useful to have it installed on an iPad, for the larger viewing area, as well as your iPhone, for the portability and convenience in the field.
When in the field, please PUT YOUR PHONE INTO FLIGHT MODE. This greatly extends your phone's battery life.

A U.S. Geology Professor
I can’t say enough great stuff about this app! The title makes it sound like it’s for casual tourists, but it really is more for practicing geoscientists. If you are doing geological research in Australia, especially if you are a foreigner coming to Oz for the first time, this app will save you tons of time. You don’t have to georeference your own copies of the 1:100,000 geological maps of your study areas in Australia and you don’t have to carry a lot of paper maps with you. Load this app into your tablet and download all the maps before your trip and you’re all set. The GPS in your phone or tablet communicates seamlessly with the app and lets you know exactly where you are at every moment. And, the maps are very well georeferenced. Be careful trusting the mapped roads, especially in the Outback, as many of the tracks vanish in just a few years of non-use. You can track your paths and use them later or share them with colleagues or graduate students who might be working in the same area - that way you only have to explore for useful roads once! Saving and exporting the tracks is a breeze!
Suggestions for improvement include using a double tap instead of a single tap to bring up the window that tells you what rock unit you’re in - I often brought up that window by accident, which can be really annoying. I also couldn’t easily figure out how to mark and save individual locations.
