Customer Reviews

A good editor that would be truly great with a few extra features.

I've looked at most of the markdown editors available for Mac, and this one so far is the best for me. Typed was a close contender, but pricier and not as smooth in terms of UI performance. However, there are a few things I'd suggest for future versions (in order of importance), things that would probably steal me away if I found them in another editor.

1. Easier file navigation. Maybe a sidebar for folders, recent docs, something. Tabs might be nice for switching between docs. Having to open/close/minimize each doc in a new window is tedious. Sublime would be a good editor to mimic in this regard.

2. Document navigation. Scrolling long documents can be disorienting and tedious. Treating document headings as anchors in a sidebar navigation would alleviate that pain.

3. Custom themes. The two official themes available (dark, light) aren't bad, but they aren't as good as they could be, and I have no control over them beyond base font/size. I would very much like to be able to tweak the typography, especially for the preview, and create new themes for various reading contexts.

4. Remove the top/bottom margin gradients. A light border/line would be less distracting. Some part of my brain is always trying to find the gradient boundaries. If content is not meant to be seen, clip it.

Fantastic

If anyone is considering buying iA Writer PRO or iA writer, please look no further than this app.

This app has empathy for the user. It has limited settings, and is simple, but the settings it does have, are those that matters most. You can change the font size and make sure you can read it. iA Writer doesn’t do that. That’s something extremely small like “oh why would I Want that", but it is ridiculously important, because when you need it most, when you’re foaming at the mouth with inspiration, and you gotta be like “oh shoot how do I make this text bigger again, gosh my eyes are getting old” and by the time you have opened the program, figured out how to get the text bigger, realize it isn’t big enough, and THEN switch to another app (probably Byword) you’ll have forgotten EVERYTHING you ever wanted to write or accomplish in your entire life.

Very much like taking a sticker off an apple.

I really do love this app, and it’s iOS counterpart. The only thing it misses are text analyzing features, which you are in Marked 2, and they are even better than the analyzing features in iA Writer Pro. Trust me. I’ve tried them all. Peeled off all the stickers on all the apples.

The distraction-free writing experience I was looking for

It has been a while since I had taken the time to write in any form of scheduled manner and Byword has made it easy not just to get in a rhythm, but also to focus only on the words. I unlocked the publishing feature in the app because the ability to send whatever I’m writing straight to my tumblr blog with just a quick keyboard shortcut is handier than anything else. Using this app in full screen mode provides the best distraction-free writing experience that I’ve been able to use and it makes all the difference in the word. Superb markdown integration and great features make this the best writing app in the AppStore at least for me.
