Poor man's Rosetta Stone
... not that Rostta Stone is that effective for Mandarin. But this scaled down copy of Rosetta Stone bears all the earmarks of a language program originally developed for a Romance language, and then applied wholesale to Mandarin -- it doesn't work well.
First of all, the text is in Chinese Characters -- so small that you can barely make it out, even though there is plenty of room on the screen. There is no use of Pinyin at all, so there is no way of checking your sound and tones against what you hear. Even in China little kids start learning Chinese by learning Pinyin. In this course, you can choose to write the answer to match the picture and Chinese Character. This does work, but you would have to know how to type in Chinese to begin with.
So this is definitely not for a beginner, which belies the title, "Chinese in a month" -- yah, right! For somebody a little more advanced, it is just frustrating.
I like this app for naturalness in acquiring a language, but I would find it helpful if a phonetic english alphabet were used for the sounds along with the Chinese characters. With one syllable words, or not knowing where one word ends and another begins, it would make it much easier to discern the sounds.
