Chunky Comic Reader
By Michael Ferenduros
Open iTunes to buy and download apps.
Try an app that makes your comics look great, makes reading them a pleasure, and takes all the friction out of importing and managing them.
• Ultra clean and simple to use
• Smart upscaling makes even low-res comics look great
• Auto contrast/tint fixes yellow pages and faded ink
• Self-organising library - just drop in your comics and go
• Download comics in the background while you read, directly from your cloud file-storage service or the web
• Upgrade to pro, and download from your PC, Mac or NAS as well
• Parental controls let you flag specific comics as ok, and passcode-lock everything else out of sight
• Single-page or two-up page view
• Right-to-left reading mode
• Post screenshots directly to Twitter, Facebook, or Reddit
Chunky supports CBZ, CBR, CBT and PDF comics, and understands ComicRack and ComicBookLover tags.
It can browse and download directly from iCloud Drive, Dropbox, Transporter, Google Drive, OneDrive, Amazon Cloud Drive, Box, Pogoplug, Mediafire and Copy, and you can copy files in and out with iTunes on your computer or download them via the built-in web browser.
Upgrade to Pro and it'll also connect to Mac or Windows shared folders, FTP or SFTP servers, ComicStreamer, Calibre or Ubooquity libraries, and run a mini web and webDAV server you can use to copy files in and out.
What's New in Version 2.5.1
Fix a nasty crash on startup related to .CBT comics.
Apologies if you were affected, and my thanks to everyone who reported the problem.
Absolutely the best
When I first tried this app it was pretty good, but not the best, but it was by far the easiest to get my comic book files into so I stuck with it. Over the several years since, the developer has improved and refined every aspect of the app, from the organization UI to the reading interface to the performance. This is now bar none one of the best apps on the iPad. If you read comics of any kind, you should at least give this app a try. I am particularly a fan of the numerous easy options for downloading comics for a server or cloud storage account. If you have a digital comics collection on a NAS or server this will solve any frustrations you have. A+.
AWESOME reader for the price (FREE!). Works great on the iPad Pro!!
Easy to use. Youu can do all the basic reading on the free version!
(It’s got IAP for other AWESOME features which are worth doing!)
On the iPad Pro the comics are the actual size of regular comics, it’s a whole new experience compared to reading on a regular iPad!! While comics look pretty great full screen on a regular iPad, it’s the smaller fonts not resolving well enough that makes it hard to read.
You can connect to DropBox (etc) but be sure to edit and “+” it to the cloud list (or you can only bring over one at a time. So if you’ve got a craving for something in your library), great but if not it seems inconvenient. It pulls a whole folder down from a networked drive (and DropBox too, I think).
THE best comic book reader
Oh man, Chunky is by far the best way to enjoy comics short of having the real thing.
Organization and customization is superb, there's never any nags for IAPs, and import is a breeze. Reading comics is delightful: navigation is fluid and intuitive. All of these features are scant in every other CBR reader, and I've tried most of them.
My only problem with this app is that it's not available on iPhone. Fingers crossed!
