Description

Cube is a singleplayer and multiplayer first person shooter that provides satisfying and fast oldskool gameplay. This opensource game is built on an entirely new and very unconventional engine. Cube is a landscape-style engine that pretends to be an indoor FPS engine, which combines very high precision dynamic occlusion culling with a form of geometric mipmapping on the whole world for dynamic LOD for configurable fps & graphic detail. Most of the engine design is targeted at reaching feature richness through simplicity of structure and brute force, rather than finely tuned complexity.

This iphone port is provided by fernLightning is a technology demo that supports all of the functionality of the desktop version including multiplayer, in-game editing, cooperative editing, demo recording, etc (though some of these are impractical on the iphone) - please visit the official Cube homepage http://www.cubeengine.com/ for more information. Furthermore we encourage people to check out the newest version of Cube - Cube 2: Sauerbraten - a far more powerful and modern version.

fernLighting thanks Wouter van Oortmerssen of dot3labs for his permission to release this port.

Awesome

This looks like quake 2. The game is cool. The game has hard controls that new first person shooter gamers and even new gamers shouldn't pick as a first choice. I mean, I'm used to first person shooters as I've played call of duty and other games you probably don't know about. Though, the game could use a d-pad or analog stick, this might have lag the game though. I wish you could see all the things you do while playing the game as it is hard to remember. All this might not be too much for the iphone's and iPod touch's processor, but the graphics chip might not be able to handle all the extra screen space as the bitmapping and the amount of enemies might be too much for the iPod touch or iPhone. The visuals on the iPhone are about gamecube limits. Anyways, great game, great price, but hard controls.

3.5/5

Update: you should definitely try this before getting any other fps on the iPhone. Just so you can experience other games. Though. This game feels too much like a tech demo. I feel that this game could be more polished. Anyways, you seriously have to get this, if you don't then you're retarded, jk. But it's free. You have nothing to lose.

Excellent port

Very well done port of the computer title. It keeps all the fun it has on pc. People complain about the tilt controls, but I found them to be fun and original. It's a nice break from the virtual joystick and is perfectly tuned. The graphics are unheard of in terms of sheer complexity for the iPhone and iPod touch. The single player mode is a lot of fun. The only issue I have with this game is that because of the release of cube 2 for pc, no one plays the original cube anymore. This of course, makes finding a multiplayer match near impossible. A port of cube 2 for iPhone and iPod touch would enable multiplayer to be successful and be absolutely great. Bottom line: For the the free price tag, this game keeps the open source model of the cube engine and puts it on the iPhone an iPod touch. Worth a download, worth many play throughs, and a permanent spot on your app list.

Cube

I think of this port of Cube as a tech demo; a proof of concept. The graphics are some of the best on the device, and though the control is mediocre, it's still fun to run around, load up a singleplayer game, and shoot some monsters. The biggest flaw right now, aside from slow performance, is the lack of a "back up" button. This makes it impossible to retreat while shooting. Strafing is also impossible. One way to fix this would be a control pad: A circle in the lower-right corner of the screen about half the screen high, visible or not. Dragging from the center in any direction will cause the player to go in that direction, whereas a tap will jump. The controls could also be switched, with looking tied to the "control pad" and movement accelerometer-based, since it does not require movement as precise.
