Dimmer Than Dim

Are you suffering from eye strains for staring at the screen for a long time?
Dimmer than Dim helps you to reduce eye strains and radiation by breaking the brightness limit of your screen settings.
More often than not, you'll find that even using the minimum brightness level is still dazzling. With Dimmer than Dim, you can now continuously adjust the brightness of the screen, and even break the minimum level.
Perfect for reading and writing
As a biochemistry/civil engineering PhD student I am constantly reading and writing papers. I use my 24” Asus monitor at home connected to my MacBook Pro and find that the screen brightness on the Asus is way too bright even on “0” brightness. MS Word 2011 has an option for a blue background with white text but I find the contrast just as harsh as black on white. For Adobe Acrobat, you can change the background color to anything you want, but Figures and Tables still remain white; again, the contrast is annoying and almost defeats the purpose of changing the background.
With Dimmer than Dim I can adjust the screen brightness below what is possible with my monitor-Perfect! As others have mentioned, an update would be nice to keep the brightness consistent from desktop to desktop. One minor downfall is that when my MBP is set up as the “secondary” screen, the app does not affect it. Trying to switch the brightness on the 2ndary monitor does not work and only adjust the primary screen. However, because my MBP is the secondary monitor there is no need for adjusting brightness because I can manually adjust it with the standard brightness keys. This makes me wonder what it is like for multiple external monitors though. Still, it does everything I need it to so, 5 stars!
Effective, super simple to activate, and FREE!
I'm a new mama with a job and a dissertation that needed to be finished yesterday. This app's a lifesaver! Not kidding. I (silently) thank the developer(s) for it every time I'm sitting/lying perfectly still and silent in a darkened room, because my daughter needs me close by in order to nurse/sleep, and I HAVE to get some work done (one- or semi-one-handed) on my tiny, beautiful, but glarlingly bright, Macbook Air.
Dimming the screen is easy to accomplish quickly and without rousing the wee one, since all it takes is a fast move of the finger to the app's icon and two short, 1-finger taps. After that, I'm free to shift, as needed, back and forth between nursing/snuggling/singing/etc. and researching/writing - and all without fear of waking the baby! (You might have to be a parent or caregiver to a little one to appreciate how powerful - and realistic - this fear can feel. If you're neither, trust me- It's a special kind of anxiety that most, save the truly exceptional, go to great lengths to reduce).
Thank you to the folk who got this app up and running…and, thank you, in particular, for the icon's position in the top menu bar. Love it. As for those browsing the app store, I can't recommend this one highly enough.
This guy gets it
The guy - or gal - who created Dimmer Than Dim gets it. When you’re looking at a browser (like Google) that turns your screen into a glaring bright white assaulting your eyes, even turning the screen brightness down to the lowest level (on a Mac, at least) doesn’t cut it. Screen time at night is messing with people’s sleep cycles in a major way, and for the life of me I don’t understand why Apple and other manufacturers don’t get it.
When you absorb light your brain limits the production of the neurotransmitters (like serotonin) that naturally help your body sleep. The more light, the less serotonin. The less of serotonin, the less quantiy and quality of sleep you’re going to get. It’s that simple. So massive kudos to Dimmer Than Dim for comprehending the simple, simple fact that we don’t need to light up the night sky with our laptops - we only need as much brightness as is necessary to view material comfortably. Thank you!
