Description

Discourse is the 100% open source discussion platform built for the next decade of the Internet. It works as:

- a mailing list
- a discussion forum
- a long-form chat room

The application provides:

- A central spot to view all notifications, unread counts and new counts from your forums
- Real time push notifications for officially hosted Discourse forums
- Authentication via Safari for quicker access to your sites

What’s New

Version 1.8.15

This version restores notification support for self-hosted sites. The app now registers a background task that updates the badge counts and if there are new items, it shows a notification to the user (example: "1 new notification, see what's new on discourse.examplesite.com").

Usable

As has been noted, the relaunch effect is a nuisance: if you do too much heavy stuff in the interim, the app loses your place and starts out from scratch. And, of course, unlike a browser, there is no kind of tabs option, which would be immensely helpful at times.

For me, though, the biggest defect is the to-top scroll function (where touching the top of the screen scrolls to the top of the page). I use iCab for serious browsing, which does not have this at all relying instead on a persistent scroll bar (which can also be problematic at times). The problem is that the long-scroll pageless format used by Discourse means that scroll-to-top absolutely makes no sense. Discourse has its own little quick-scroll widget, anyway. The developer/maintainer needs to disable the scroll-to-top response.

Nothing special but it works

Notifications don’t work, and you can’t sort anything, but other then that it works just fine at its job, putting all of the discourse forums in in one place

Does what it needs to do

IMO it is not a problem that the app opens a web View for you to interact with discourse itself. Discourse provides such a solid mobile browsing experience anyway that building a native app which would improve upon what the mobile web version does would require a ton more work than most people realize. I think that managing notifications and providing a unified location for accessing the discourse instances that you follow is a perfect sweet spot for this app and so far it has served that role well.
