Disk Inspector

Open the Mac App Store to buy and download apps.

Disk Inspector is a utility that allows you to locate "space eaters" - big files and folders saved on any of your Mac disks or drives.

Do you have any finishing free space on your disk? Thinking about buying a new disk? Hold on before you do. First, remove any unused stuff from your computer. Use Disk Inspector to find the biggest files on your Mac, and remove the unused files!

To do that, it scans the disk file structure, and shows your files and folders on the disk in a sunburst-like diagram. Bigger items are bigger on the diagram, so it's really easy to find bigger ones.

Disk Inspector allows you to scan: Hard Disk Volumes, CD and DVD disks, Flash drives, External storage disks, mounted DMG volumes, and even folders with FileVault protection!

Disk Inspector has a visual scanning mode, so that you can see the results even during the scan process. There is a small progress bar on the dock icon to show the current progress.

For every disk you can obtain additional information about it: if the disk is writable, bootable, the file system type, and connect protocol. For every disk item, you can use QuickLook Preview, get additional detailed information, and show the item in Finder for operating it - to delete or move unused files.

Note: For stability reasons, all hidden files are displayed as a single item in the diagram.

• Animated scanning process
• Displaying found files & folders during scan process
• Progress bar during scanning process
• Detailed volume information available
• Information about files
• QuickLook for files
• Copy path for the item
• Displaying the folders structure, skipping free space
• And even rotate the resulting diagram!

Customer Reviews

Incredibly Easy to Use and Effective!

I don't usually write reviews but I felt compelled with this little gem of an app. If you want a fast, comprehensive breakdown of where exactly your disk storage is coming from, look no further! The interface is very user friendly, one click to scan. The color breakdown makes it quite easy and straightfoward to nail down where your problems in storage hogging media / applications may lie, and it allows you to easily navigate through the folder heirarchies with seperate color, pinwheel diagrams.

What this does, it does extremely well. It's a steal at $2.99 on the app store right now. Already paid for itself. Personally I nailed down 50 GB of unndeeded disk hogging right after my first scan. Doesn't explicitly say in the description, but it does work with SSDs no problem.

If you want to know exactly what is taking up space on your harddrive in a streamlined, easy to use and asthetically pleasing manner, look no further. Recommended!

Pretty good, especially for the price

For sure, this is a very fast mapper. I don’t think it shows you everything at once like Disk Inventory X, but it’s better that way. You can see more if you click on a directory, anyway. I’ll make a few requests, though:

-Disk Inventory X lets you pick a volume OR a folder in a normal browse window. I can do that here by clicking through the wheel, but it has to parse my whole hard drive first.

-Disk Inspector chokes on Time Machine backups. Granted, so does the File Size parser in OS X, and I haven’t tried with Disk Inventory X. I’m guess it’s all the symlinks. If there’s a way to make this work, Disk Inspector would be 10x more useful.

-Full screen support, please!

To end on a positive note, I do like this app and I don’t regret purchasing it; it’s very quick and that is its best feature.

New to Mac….I appreciate this app.

I recently purchased a MBP retina with a 500Gig SSD. It’s my first venture into the fray of the world of Apple (which I have wanted to do for years). I have had a bit of a time switching over and it seems that file navigation is my number one issue. This app really lays it out in an easy to understand (and find) format. Because my Mac is less than 2 months old, the app really didn’t find any hidden ‘hogs’ that I didn’t know about, but I can see the true value in this app and appreciate the intuitive ‘wheel’ it uses so you can really home in on what’s using up your storage space.

I recommend this app to anyone who wants a very fast and accurate breakdown of what and where is on their storage device. Well done!
