Best language app!
For anyone who is trying to learn a new language, this is the app for you! There are speaking, listening, spelling, and all sorts of lessons. They are constantly updating and adding new languages (some new ones include Norwegian, Russian, and Ukrainian). The exercises are always fun, and you can set goals for yourself in terms of how much you are going to do. You earn XP as you progress, and there are levels and you can compete with friends (should you wish to...). You can also earn "lingots", which are these gems that can be redeemed for different things, such as new outfits for "Duo" (the owl, who will be your mentor) or new lessons outside of the levels provided (for example, there is a lesson in flirting). The only thing I don't like about the app is that they - as of so far - do not have certain things the the mobile version has. On the mobile version, they give you a lingot for every time you pass a lesson without loosing any hearts/lives. Also, you can have timed sessions and earn lingots that way. The lingots also can be exchanged for extra lives or time on the mobile version. Sorry for the long rant, but I really, truly love this app. Get it - you won't regret it!
I already spoke 3 languages, and I downloaded this app for more practice and try some new languages. I currently use it to practice my Spanish and Portuguese, and I've started learning French. I am very impressed with the app's diversity in exercises as well as how they are implemented. I can tell the developers must have significant experience in language learning. A person's ability to learn the language through the app is a great base for practice as long as they are diligent. The next part is the learner seeking out natives to converse with!
I have found an occasional bug that says an answer is incorrect even though the answer given is what they write in the "correct response". One incorrect answer was "a animal" instead of "an animal", which is true, but the only choice was "a animal" and no "an".
Anyway, very rare glitches and a truly great mostly free app. I have not spent money on it yet and have never felt pressured to make purchases. Though, I would say the developers deserve some compensation for their great work!
I have had fun looking at the different languages but I realized how wonderful this really is when Polish was offered for the English speaker. I had been using the English for the Polish speaker which actually helped me to learn a little vocabulary. But now I am able to cement the grammar I have learned in a class, add to my vocabulary and best of all, remember how to spell all those vexing Polish words. It is a very relaxing way to learn and I am so grateful to the developers. I go back and forth between early lessons and new lessons and this constant repetition is the key to remembering. I think it works best when used in conjunction with other sources of learning, but it is still a big help in familiarizing one's self with common words in my language. My only complaint is that there is not an 'a' with the hook on the bottom in the choices of the a's, a commonly used letter in Polish, but I think that is an issue with the apple keyboard.
