For the price I paid... It's a joke

Mr.Jingles123

The way this app is manufactured, sold, and supported, portrays to me the image of a company that is having a hard time to adapt to changing markets and market conditions. This is the most expensive software I own on my Macbook, and it is also the least delivering.
What can I say... If I want to OCR a document quickly, I can't. I have to export it into a file format and save it first. I can't just have a plain text rendering. I am blind, and this feature would be very useful to quickly access the content of PDFs that are not made searchable, or to read regular paper documents without needing to save the actual scan.
I can't open any files straight from the Finder, either. Seriously? How much did you have to rush this out?
What about batch processing?
How about network scanners? What about pasting images? What about recognizing PDFs intuitively, and without having to rebuild one?

Anyway. If you think I'm wrong, buy the software and enjoy it.

Developer Response

Dear Sir,
We are sorry to hear that using FineReader caused you much difficulties.

We'd like to answer some of the listed questions.
To open image from Finder please do the following:
Ctrl+Click the image in Finder, tap button to move right- the focus will be on option Open in drop-down menu. Tap button down and click right to select Open With menu. FineReader should be listed in this menu.

Batch processing is supported with default Mac OS tool Automator.

Scanning through network scanners is supported. Please check if scanning through network scanner works with ImageCapture. If it does, but scanning through network scanner still doesn't work in FineReader please contact our Technical Support via e-mail: help@abbyy.com

Thank you for your comments.

Best regards,
ABBYY Team

Surprisingly good

I haven’t used OCR software since OmniPage Pro stopped working on OS X. I was wary of this app due to the two negative reviews; but there are two positive ones at this time, so I figured I’d give it a try. Which was easy to do, considering that the price is one fifth what I paid for OmniPage over a decade ago.

In a nutshell, the recognition is great. As a torture test, I scanned song lyrics from a couple of CD booklets. One booklet was simple; white text on a black background. Perfect translation, despite some weird, made up words. Other booklets, with textured or photographic backgrounds, gave me about 95% accuracy - much better than I expected. One booklet that had a weird font, was poorly OCR’d, which I completely expected. However, there was another booklet that had normal fonts mixed with a quirky looking font (for song titles). I purposely excluded the titles (because I firgued they wouldn’t be recognized), but accidentally left one in. And it was OCR’d properly.

Buggy, sluggish, barely works at all — a waste of money

I bought this thinking it would speed up my OCR processing and make it more accurate, but it didn’t take long for me to realize the program I was already using (OCRKit) is much, much better overall. Fine Reader doesn’t deal well with large pdfs — usually they cause it to crash at one stage or another. And often the app crashes before it even opens up. Today I had to Force Quit it because it froze up while reading a pdf of 800+ pages. When I try to open the program back up, it asks me whether I want to recover the file I was using. I say yes, but then nothing happens: the program doesn’t open, the document isn’t restored, nada. ABBYY ought to test this software thoroughly, and say what it will actually do without crashing so that people don’t waste their money. No one should assume that all users are usng OCR for documents of just a few pages. I wish I could have my money returned.
