“I found Game of War – Fire Age more engaging than its closest analogue, Clash of Clans” - NY Times review
5/5 “I love strategic RPG games like this. I first started off with Clash Of Clans and wondered if there was anything as similar to this and found Game Of War. It's easy to get started with and addictive.”
5/5 “This is the best MMO and game ever. I have played other MMO games but this is the best one yet! You can battle other players and collect resources and build really cool buildings. If I had to rate this game it would be 10 stars. But, there is no 10 star rating.”
5/5 “Best real-time Strategy game I have ever played!”
5/5 “If you like games like Boom Beach or Clash of Clans I think you'll like this one!”

What a great game
You'll need to form alliances within Game of War, teaming up with other countries and sharing resources and supplies. These aren't always the most trustworthy agreements - sometimes their king will attempt to overtake yours in the name of leadership. However, a good Alliance is nice to have, especially when you're crushing a rogue country under your boot, making them pay for dastardly deeds and displaying true power.
With Game of War, though, it takes a while to get there. Like the best MMOs, or "grind-fests," it takes time and perhaps money to build a nation. Don't expect to jump in and have your ideal kingdom in minutes.
Thankfully, the investment is worth it. Machine Zone has a great gameplay system where it's relatively easy to select your resources and take your kingdom and soldier to new heights. Crafting new weapons is a delight, as you can see how they take effect in the game's real-time battles. The scope of these battles is impressive, especially if you're a fan of epic fights. Some more intimate one-on-one encounters for leadership would've been nice, but the game does fine without them.
Game of War looks good. You can see how your kingdom's growth is coming along, while keeping an eye open for neighboring allies - or enemies - with ease. However, this game is best played on an iPad, as it may be too hard to navigate on a tinier iPhone screen.
Horribly one sided game
This is the first review I've ever written on any game period. I would like to start off by saying this game is addicting. It has fun mechanics that would make for some awesome gameplay.
To say it's one sided is completely an understatement. I played this game for months about a year ago. Took a long time to progress to SH 17 with just a little money spending. Even back then there were big spenders who took the fun out of the game. Having the capability of a single player being able to wipe out an entire alliance of SH 15 and up is utterly ridiculous. Higher level players in larger alliances farm the smaller ones constantly. There is no room to grow unless you hide and buy peace shield after peace shield. I quit almost a year ago because of alliances just farming all the lower players constantly. Decided to give it another run a day ago. BIG MISTAKE. I activated my old level 17 SH account and used all speed boosts to get my researching up and heal all my troops back. It literally took 1 day for a max level player with 3 billion power to teleport in and farm the entire alliance I joined. No resources, no troops, no traps, and a hero in yet another prison. Don't waste your time with this game unless you're willing to spend ALOT of money to be competitive. The developers know the big spenders will keep spending and have tailored the game to keep them around instead of making any progress toward bringing in new players and keeping them.
I'd like to begin this review by saying that I've enjoyed strategy games since the mid 1990s. That being said, drawing comparisons between the classics and a mobile game like this is unfair. Regardless, I've also played Clash of Clans, Boom Beach, Forge of Empires, and that Star Wars CoC ripoff. The only game of the lot that I continue to play is Boom Beach.
Like other reviewers have mentioned, I, too, was and am annoyed with GoW's relentless advertising in other apps and on TV. But I was in between things to do on Boom Beach and am always looking for a new game to play, so I decided to give this a shot. The UI is clunky, to say the least. The gameplay is boring, and players are relentlessly bombarded with attempts to sell them in-game items. I understand that the developers have to make money somehow (especially to fund GoW's massive advertising budget), but GoW does it poorly. There's an art to offering in-app purchases without intruding on gameplay and GoW does it with the finesse of a polar bear doing gymnastics.
I guess you just *have* to spend money on this game to enjoy it. Unlike other games, where you can be patient instead of reaching into your wallet to get through the game, you won't have any fun without spending any money. If you want to spend a couple hundred dollars on a mobile game, then perhaps this game is for you. Otherwise, download Boom Beach instead and send me the $100 you would've wasted on this sluggish, money-hungry app.
