Crime does pay.
The hugely successful, highly controversial Grand Theft Auto franchise moves into three dimensions in the dark and seedy underworld of Liberty City.
With the freedom to go anywhere and jack anyone, Grand Theft Auto III puts the dark, intriguing and ruthless world of crime at your fingertips, if you have enough guts to take it.
GTA III - w/ no auto lock
First off let me just say that i have always loved this game. i knew i had to play it since the first time i saw the orignal trailer back in 2001 and it did not disappoint.
like many others i bought the game as soon as i saw it on the app store without question.
This is the exact same game i have played countles times for many years. however, my only issue (BIG ISSUE) is the controls. no matter what, i just cannot get use to using the keyboard & pad. i bought an application that allowes me to use my PS3 controller but its still not the same. after reconfiguring each button and spending countless hours sweaking it, i still cant make it work 100% the same. this really frustrates me because a game like gta 3 needs an excellent control scheme.
Rockstar pls fix this issue. it must have some kind of gamepad support so it can work exaclty like the orignal does on the ps2.
Once the control system is fixed, i would be more than happy to give this game a 5 star rating.
one more thing, like i mentioned earlier no auto lock on. witch makes the game more difficult.
hope this review helps anyone who wants to buy it.
A classic game in OS X, running great.
First let me address one of the previous comments in a review that was incorrect. You can run this game at whatever resolution you want. Just go into display options and use the arrow keys to select the resolution, then hit enter.
For the best graphics experience, turn your draw distance all the way up, and disable trails, they are distracting.
This is the classic GTA III that everyone remembers from the PS2, et. al. It really is a worthwhile game if you have never played it, or if you are like me and have played it a few times, and would enjoy playing it again on your mac.
I have a 2009 iMac with a Core i5, and it works fine runs very fast, no issues at all at 2560x1440. This is to be expected however for how old this game is. For the geeks out there, it is a wine port. Revealing package contents shows a dedicated wine server setup. The end user experience however is flawless, so far.
The reason this is four stars and not five 1)This game is now 10 years old, and it shows. 2)A wine port for some quick money from Rockstar. As long as they support it, and everything is hashed out, this isn't necesarily a bad thing.
Great Classic Game!
Love this game! remember playing back in the days on my ps2, so when I saw this game up on the Mac App Store I knew I immediately had to get it. Nothing really new same Gta 3 that we've known and love. Only real drawback is the fact that I have to play with the keyboard and mouse takes awhile to get used to, hopefully they'll add an update in the near future for gamepad compadability and higher resolution too that 640x480x32 isnt gonna fly by me Rockstar. lets get an update going! overall though if you havent played it get it GTA is known for there epic story lines! also be aware Vice city comes out on the 25th and San Andreas sep.1 so if you aint got enough cash you might want to consider saving your $15 for those instead.
UPDATE: I apologize to you Rockstar, you CAN run a higher resolution im currently running mine at 1080p on a iMac 2.5 ghz intel core i5 it looks and runs fantastic! no lag whatsoever. They still dont have gamepad compadability but if you have the gamepad companion app you can run a gamepad controller (hate using the keyboard).
