Featured in the NY TImes, LA Times, Wired Autopia, and other publications, greenMeter is an app for the iPhone and iPod Touch that computes your vehicle's power and fuel usage characteristics and evaluates your driving to increase efficiency, reduce fuel consumption and cost, and lower your environmental impact. Results are displayed in real time, while driving, to give instantaneous feedback.
Though it's most effective on the road, you can learn from greenMeter even before you get in the car. By tipping the device forward and backward to simulate acceleration, you can see the effects of acceleration, aerodynamic drag, and rolling resistance across the speed range. Then implement this knowledge on the road, by choosing an efficient cruising speed and using the built-in eco-driving displays to moderate acceleration while you drive.
Thanks to a novel algorithm that computes parameters over the entire speed range, the app does not need GPS, opening usage up to all generations of the iPhone and iPod Touch.
If you're into hypermiling or eco-driving, want to make your transportation more efficient, or are simply interested in maintaining a green lifestyle, give greenMeter a try! The software can pay for itself within 1-2 tanks of gas.
Please visit the greenMeter website for technical details, setup/usage instructions, and more info. And be sure to check out the new demo videos!
Notes: greenMeter can compute data in US or metric units. The software offers two calibration options for the accelerometer, one to correct internal offsets, and the other to set the forward direction when the device is positioned in a vehicle. Settings and preferences (including inputs to specify vehicle, weather, and fuel characteristics) are accessed from the "i" button. To switch between the various graph modes, just tap the display.
What's New in Version 2.0
Three new eco-driving efficiency meters, including gauge, leaf, and bar displays. Revised graphics. New "easy setup" option for entering vehicle specs.
Very well thought out product
Hunter Research & Technology's product is surpassed only by their
customer service. I have interacted with thousands of companies as an
engineer, tutor, consultant, and as a consumer. The majority of these
companies issue canned responses to any question which may arise that
isn't covered in the manual, or be rude enough to tell you to read the
manual or see their FAQ section as if you're question is meritless, some
answer a completely different question, while other choose to ignore your
In my 16 years as a professional, I have rarely come across a company with truly professional and superb customer support. Not only were my emails
read and understood, multiple because I feared I would be referred to the
manual and thought it necessary to colorfully state I read it, but a comprehensively and well though out answer was received within hours from
the developer/owner himself.
This interaction left me so amazed, I felt
that it needed to be expressed in words which convey the feeling of my
gratitude. Thank you, Mr. Hunter, for proving there are still individuals in business driven by passion and their customer dedication. I look
forward to more new products in the future as you have earned a customer for life.
The color-changing leaf visualization was enough by itself to make me buy it.
A couple thoughts for consideration in future versions:
(1) Data don't seem to be saved once the app is closed. It would seem that retaining data between sessions and providing long-term statistics on driving behavior would be highly useful.
(2) I expected the app to function like the fuel efficiency gauge in many cars (not mine though), so I'd know with one familiar number (MPG) approximately how efficiently I'm driving. If the app also made use of GPS I'd think this wouldn't be too difficult to implement.
Promising overall; great use of iPhone sensors. I look forward to future versions.
not very useful for hypermiling
I've figured out how to improve the mileage of my '01 civic from 32 to 45, but this app was not helpful in this process. The app might be good if you have a vehicle that benefits from minimizing acceleration, but in my case I use mostly accelerate/coast and "driving without brakes" and it's not really useful for either of those techniques.
