Awesome Writing App!
I first discovered this app for the iPad and fell in love. I then bought the Mac version and it quickly became my go-to app for writing notes and everything else. It is simple and it works. It is very lightweight, so it doesn’t slow down your system at all if you have multiple documents open at once.
I simply cannot say enough about this app. It does what it says on the tin and very well at that. If you want a nice writing app, whether you are a student, businessperson, homemaker, or professional writer, give this app a try.
For the record I am a professiona writer. I use this app not only for daily notes and logs but for writing my blog posts and working on the books that I publish. It suits my needs very well and I am quite satisfied.
While there are times that I would love to have a night mode, I understand the the pro version of this app has one. However, I cannot justify the price difference between the apps for a single feature so I am content with it not having the option.
Great writing app if with two more features
This app would be awesome if with two more features. The first is to add a night mode into it. The second is to remove the “update the iA writer Pro” thing from both ipad and iphone versions. That is seriously annoying and seems to imply that this version is not good enough and you should get the Pro one. Other than that, the app is user friendly, with most of the features one would desire from a writer app.
Hard on the eyes, lost content for me, bye!
This is a great app for writing, especially if you switch between iPad and Mac. It gets out of the way and just lets you concentrate on writing. Perfect! However, the developer's cussed insistence that they know better than users in every instance makes the app less than usable for those of us with less than perfect vision. I can only look at black on white for 15 minutes before I have to close the app, so I tend to use another app that is not as good, but which I can look at for hours.
If you check the support page for how to switch from black text on bright white background you will see that they suggest you modify your display settings to make it easier to see. Some of us cannot look at black on white for long periods of time without severe eye strain and requiring US to modify system settings just to use a text editor is annoying. And silly. And backwards. Then we have to switch back every time we switch to some other task?!
I appreciate that the developers feel that their aesthetic sense of the correct way to write leads them to focus on making the app this way, but they are wrong. They are ignoring decades of accessibility and usability research for a dogmatic notion of correctness that does not serve users with vision disabilities.
Please, make it very hard to change font size and app colors if you must, but make it possible. To suggest that it is difficult and may arrive some distant day in the future rings hollow to those of us who are professional software developers. It is trivial to change in code, only stubbornness is stopping this change from happening. Please reconsider.
UPDATE: Two days ago the app lost a new poem on me, a disaster! If you write poety you know that losing the initial spark of a poem is a terrible loss and can ruin a poem as it never comes back the same way. I had opened the app and quickly written a poem and when I went to save it, poof! Gone! The app didn't even bother to keep a backup of the edit bufferes like other editors (BB Edit, etc.) do, so it was GONE. That's just unacceptable. So I changed the app to not load on startup and pulled the app from the task bar. I looked around and found Desk on the App Store, a new editor where the developer listens to customers. For example, he changed the app to have a dark mode for those of us with vision problems in a few days, and has a dialog with user on the app forum. Much better than the disdain I get from IA Writer.
Sorry IA Writer, you get one star now and unfortunately I can't set it to zero. I can tolerate your arrogance if the app works well, but losing text just isn't acceptable at all. Bye.
