Miitomo is a smart-device app that sparks one-of-a-kind conversations between you and your friends. It's from Nintendo—and free to start!

Basic Features of Miitomo
■ Make a Mii to Look Like You

Miitomo features the Mii characters that debuted on Nintendo's Wii system. Choose from a wide library of facial features to make your Mii look just like you.

After creating your Mii and giving it a nickname, you can further customize how it speaks and even how it moves and behaves.

■ Your Mii Is Your Social Go-Between

In Miitomo, your Mii and your friends' Mii characters act as social go-betweens. Your Mii will ask you questions about those little details about yourself you'd never think to ask. Your friends' Mii characters will do the same.

Your Mii and their Mii characters tell each other these details.

■ Dress Your Mii However You Want

Costumes, streetwear, formal fashion, every-day style—you can find it all in the Miitomo shop.

You can get clothing items with Miitomo coins, which you earn by playing Miitomo. You can also purchase Miitomo coins.

■ Win Prizes From Miitomo Drop

Miitomo features a minigame in which you drop a Mii into a play field, and then watch it bounce around as it falls toward a variety of platforms. You'll win a prize based on where it lands. Some clothing items are available only in Miitomo Drop.

Note: To play Miitomo Drop, you need Miitomo coins, which you earn by playing Miitomo. You can also use game tickets, which you can get as a daily bonus, among other ways. You can also purchase Miitomo coins.

■ Make Your Mii a Star with Miifotos

In Miitomo, you can create images called Miifotos. You can let your creativity go wild, putting your Mii and friends' Mii characters in images you make from a library of stamps, fonts, and backgrounds. You can also use photos from a smart device's camera as backgrounds for Miifoto creations.

Editors’ Notes

Nintendo’s first iOS app uses Miis—the adorable avatars that debuted on its Wii console—as the basis for an intriguing new social experience. You start by creating a Mii and carefully picking its looks, clothes, and voice. (Expanding our wardrobe is our new obsession.) But the real fun begins when your Mii starts asking about everything from your favorite food to what you did last weekend. Connect with friends, and your lovable Miis question each other. Poring over friends’ answers lets you learn about them in a unique way; and with Miiphotos to share and minigames to play, it’s a scene you’ll want to keep visiting.

Not much of a game, but a fun pick-me-up

The fundamentals of a social app is there, but there's nothing else in the app that makes you want to stay and keep using it. The whole concept of a social app is that you have all your friends and yourself using it because it's fast, convenient, and fun to use or play. If Miitomo has any plans of remaining relevant in the mobile space, it needs something to keep people interested in it, as changing your clothes and answering questions just isn't as interesting as Ninty thought it would be. The drop minigames are by far, the only real fun you can derive from the app at the moment, considering you really have nothing else to do but window shop for new clothes and type answers for questions that you may or may not care about.

Making new friends is also near-discouraging, as anyone who just picks the app up has zero chances of making a new Miitomo friend unless they send them an app invite, or another person already owns it and still uses it on a regular basis. Why not have a hub world where Miis of other people gather at? We could then play more minigames and add them as friends from there. Let us mingle with anonymous users Nintendo! You already let us do so with Miiverse anyway, why not let us do it on a platform that is actually made for social interaction?

Can still confirm in mid-2017 that this is easily a free meme machine with a Nintendo Seal of Approval.

Please Keep Miiphoto!

I can’t believe they are closing this down, and after only a bit over a year. I use Miitomo often for the Miiphoto feature especially. There doesn’t seem to be an app half as versatile at creating fun cartoons from pictures using 3D avatars, nor half as cute. They really should allow us to keep our consummately created Mii's for such use, even if they close down the online features.

But that is the problem with these apps-as-service. They can yank the rug out from under you at any time, and there is nothing you can do about it, no matter how much effort and time and money you put in.

I’m very sad to see this go, and so quickly. Nintendo, or whoever they farmed this out to, never put in half the features it really deserved. I hope they come out with some sort of standalone Mii app one day. It’s always been one of the cutest features since the Wii days. Now I will miss the sound of my clunking Mii feet walking into the room as much as I miss the old Wii parade music...
