“King of Dragon Pass is the best game you’ve never played.”
Rock, Paper, Shotgun
“A game that can legitimately be called unique, now in close-to-definitive form. King of Dragon Pass mixes clan squabbles, an anthropologically distinct fantasy-Norse realm, and far-reaching choices, in wonderful, text-centric fashion.”
“At its beginnings you take control of a small clan that settle into an unremarkable position in Dragon Pass, choosing their beliefs and lore in a brief history. From here everything is your decision, meaning that, apart from some helpful advice from a clan ring of seven, everything that goes wrong is down to you.”
Create your own epic saga of conflict, mythology and community! Rule your own clan, take important strategic decisions, win battles and expand your influence. A unique mix of RPG and strategy: everything in King of Dragon Pass is about choice and control. Choose your counsel carefully, sign diplomatic agreements or declare war on nearby clans. This acclaimed game of magical storytelling blends interactive stories and resource management.
Immensely replayable, thanks to nearly 600 interactive scenes. Short episodes and automatic saving mean you can play even when you only have a minute or two. The built-in saga writes down the story for you and advisors with distinctive personalities help you rule your clan. Become the King of Dragon Pass!

Incredibly compelling story-based game that’s easy to sink into
This game made my vacation week. It is an amazing “choose your own adventure”-style turn-based civic game where you have a number of options to select from at every turn. So-and-so clan insulted your; do you offer gifts? compose a poem to humiliate them? raid them? submit a legal dispute? The options are broad, the saga is fun and engaging, the people are detailed and relatable and you want to lead them well.
It’s simple on graphics with just the painted scene and the text options at each turn. No big map or animations, which I usually love (Civ, SimCity fanatic). But the individual paintings for each scene are beautiful and it’s not long before you feel fully immersed, even though it’s not graphically as big as it could be.
It’s a great game to lose yourself in, to learn about another world and feel immersed, challenged, compelled and validated as you steer your people. It transcends the simple resource-maximizing rubric of many civ games and you have to embrace the cultural and religous aspects as well, making choices about how to move your people forward along multiple threads. Games are long and fulfilling. It’s the beautiful saga fantasy novel of civ games and it’s incredibly fun.
